NOT doing the cry it out method seems to lead to my child crying more overall?

I'm not going to do the cry it out method as I've been screamed at left and right to never do that even before she was born lol so I'm terrifed of it. BUT I find it very annoying knowing that if I were to attempt such a method, my baby girl would cry for a while but would eventually give in to sleep and cry less overall than she does by not doing that method. I establish a routine, let her cry for a few minutes at most, going in and meeting all her needs and soothing her, patting her bum, giving pacifier if she wants, ect....she ends up crying longer and harder than she likely would if I left her alone to cry it out in the first place. So why again is what I'm doing better for my child? She seems to be in great distress far longer this way, because I soothe, she falls asleep, and wakes screaming a few minutes later. Is my being there and trying to help even when it's not doing anything to improve the situation and she is still screaming her lungs out really helping her and making her feel more secure? She's 2 1/2 months.
(she just fell asleep after our trying for 5 hours. That's right...5 hours!!)
