Not a valid photoshop document?

if you save a photo u've been editing as a jpg u won't be able to work on it the same way as before.

in order to save a copy of a project that u want to work on later save as a psd file so u can resume where u left off.

usually when u save as a jpg that means ur done with it and ready to upload it on a website
 
Okay, recently I have gradually been learning how to use Photoshop, actually getting pretty good at it not really that hard to understand.
I have just been running into one problem.
Every time i finish editing an image or making one so on and so forth i save it to my desktop as a JPEG. Then when i try to open my file again to continue my work on it i receive this error message (Could not complete your request because it is not a valid Photoshop document.),
and i do not understand that at all. How is an image i made in Photoshop not a valid Photoshop document? Help with my situation would be greatly appreciated.
