Nostalgia trips gone wrong

Has anyone else had a favourite film when they were a kid and watched it as an adult and been horrified by how bad it is?

When I was about 7 or 8 I used to watch a film called GremloiRAB all the time, I thought it was the funniest film in the World and every time my parents let me rent a video I would choose the same thing.

About a year ago I joined one of those postal DVD rental services and was surprised to see GremloiRAB was available, I put it on my list and prepared for a pleasant trip to Nostalgiaville and a good laugh as I couldn't quite remember the story or jokes. However, i was mortified at how terrible it was and even now I am ashamed of my child self for ever liking it so much!

The Battlestar Galactica movies that were taken from the TV series and shown in cinemas over here (though I didn't know it at the time)
Conquest of the Earth was the worst offender. They finally get to Earth and have an adventure with, er, crusty old rock and roll DJ 'Wolfman' Jack. Awful though I didn't mind it at the time.

Isn't that the one where they play that old trick of "completing a really complicated series of equations, on a professor's blackboard... while he's out"? I think they nicked it from "The day The Earth stood still".

The Superman movies were like that for me. Vague, happy memories of seeing Superman II at Swanage's only cinema in my childhood, and then I never saw the movie again for maybe 10-12 years. When I finally sat myself down in front of the telly and watched it again....damn, it was painful. Some truly awful effects and stilted dialog. Nasty stuff. All the SM films were that way, getting increasingly awful from I thru IV.

(Even though they were all terrible, Superman III is still a guilty pleasure of mine. Richard Pryor saved it)

I bought Flight of the Navigator a while back, I'm sure I remember it being better. Wasn't a bad film but by no means as good as I remember. Put me right off buying 'Batteries not Included' anyway!

Funnily enough I bought Robin of Sherwood on VHS a few years ago, and caught some of the repeats on ITV3 last year.

Really enjoyed it both times! But I guess thats personal opinion for you.

Try it, you might like it :)

Its quite interesting you should say that, the general opionion amongst fans of superhero films is that Superman is one of the best superhero films made, with Superman II not far behind.

As you say there was a rapid decline, with many blaming Richard Pryor in the third from taking too much of the lime light considering it was supposed to be a Superman film.

I think if you watch them now, you have to take the fact that the first one is thirty years old into account when looking at the effects and even the "hokeyness" of the scripts ("gee lois" etc).

As a story though the first and second films do a good retelling of the origin and a battle with a strong foe.

The third film had some good moments (the evil Superman), but the fourth was just dire!
