Hi there,

Im a Hare Krishna devotee. I was thinking of getting my nose pierced and my friend said that I should get the left side done because it respresents chastity or something ?

She couldnt explain any more and ive heard that in some places a women with her nose pierced can mean she is married.

so i was wondering , what is the meaning of nose piercing in India? is it cultural or religious ?

I think it looks beautifull so ill definatly do it but it like to understand more about its meaning first.

In India piercings were regarded as a mark of beauty and social standing as well as a Hindu's honor to Parvathi the goddess of marriage in the 16th century. Nose piercing is still popular in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. It also remains popular in Middle Eastern and Arab countries. Pakistani people do this with a small diamond only, rather than a small hoop. The right side is pierced in this practice.
