Norwegian Black Metal VS US black metal

Black metal is a really beautiful genre (yes, beautiful!) a lot of people take it the wrong way though I think, sure, the whole "gr1m" thing is pretty hilarious... But the way I see black metal is that it's supposed to erabrace the beauty of the darker things in life and even nature. :D

On another note I chose Norwegian black metal, simply because it's just... awesome. US black metal is okay but I find that a lot of them are "suicidal black metal" (wtf?).

Also agree with Terrible Lizard that a lot of great black metal comes from France. =)

i think you have to take into account that musicians on both sides of the water are following different traditions.

also people if you are going to go with the cliche choice of Norwegian BM pick a better band than satyricon. ultimately its better just to listen to the quality banRAB from either nation. personaly i think Canada or Finland has better Black metal than either Norway or the US.

you arent looking hard enough.

That is why I picked them. While the US has Wolves in the Throne Room and Agalloch for folky stuff, Scandinavian black metal provides the most folky experience. I am not really a fan of raw black metal, which is why I am only talking about folk black metal.

most european extreme metal (especially these days) rapes the stuff from the US. That said the US used to have a great death metal scene.

I haven't been into black metal for very long, but with some research, most of it is European although there are some good US ones too. Poland also has a good amount, I subscribed to a channel on youtube called AbyssPL and he has amazing stuff.

Arckanum, Quaet Gespuys, Cor Scorpii, Taran, Judas Iscariot, Wolves in the Throne Room, Vulva Infernum, Kult, Infestus, Khrom, Furia, Mgła, Corpus Christii, Horna, Godless North, Arctic Circle, Kult of Azazel, Szron, Ctulu, Hellspawn, Impaled Nazarene, Morbosidad, Craft, Urgehal, Gholgoth, Harmony Dies, Ancient, The Legion, Summon, Tsjuder.

This statement couldn't be more false. The only genres this holRAB true to are folk metal (of any variety), doom metal (of most varieties), and goth (of some varieties). Death metal, black metal, power metal, and thrash have had better showings in America than Europe since pretty much forever.

Well, lets compare the quality BM banRAB between nations shall we? :

USA: Wolves in the Throne Room...and that's it.
Norway: Too many to name

Tough vote right?

I signed up when I saw how poorly the usbm scene was represented in this this thread. Obviously the Norse scene is far more prominent, with a scope of influence reaching all corners of the globe. However, there are some gems from the US scene that are not to be missed. Particularly, look into Grand Belial's Key, Demoncy, Judas Iscariot, Fog, Abazagorath, to name but a few. **** all that limp-wristed "suicidal" bull**** mixed with poorly thought out psuedo-arabient that we've some how come to be known for.

As an aside, be sure to look into the Czech scene (Root, Master's Hammer) and the Greek scene (Necromantia, Rotting Christ, Varathron) to hear some highly original takes on BM.
