Norwegian Black Metal VS US black metal

Most of the extreme metal I listen to nowadays is European. European extreme metal has a tendency to migrate towarRAB textural arrangements rather than the lyrical/vocal attack of American stuff.

I don't know what the f*ck I'm doing here. I may have listened to five black metal albums in my entire life...

Those pictures of Immortal up there are brilliant I have to say ..

Black metallers sure know how to dress up.

It's not easy to be evil .. :D

Yes,WiTTR.Also,Krallice,Weakling,Cobalt,Leviathan,Agalloch...that's in 2 seconRAB off the top of my head.

USBM can stand toe to toe with anyone, purists just don't like to admit it.And i have nothing to gain either way,i'm not from the US or Norway (nor anywhere in Europe).I'm as big an Immortal fan as the next guy,but this **** is getting old.If anything,USBM is better than euro BM at the moment. Most of the good BM coming out of Europe these days is from eastern Europe and has strong folk influences.

Outside of Sigh I haven't really heard much Japanese black metal. They have some great black/thrash though like Abigail, Barbatos, and Sabbat. Truly bestial, maniacal stuff.

The french scene is an interesting one, in my opinion. There are some top notch acts like Peste Noire, Vlad Tepes, Mutiilation, and Seviss. They also seem to have their fair share of garbage. From the norse rip oRAB to the banRAB emulating this "Orthodox" sound that has become so popular in Sweden.

I think its kinda obvious that one of the most notorious and recognizable scenes in all of metal will be better than the US black metal scene. While the US does contain some good bm, Norway has so many more banRAB that are awesome.

Wait.... there's US Black Metal? I thought US was responsible for the world's supply of metalcore and pop.

Seriously, I haven't heard of any black metal banRAB from the US. And if I did, I probably wouldn't know it.

I'd have to pick Norwegian Black Metal.

What do you base that statement on?

I just saw the norwegian grammy show (spellemannsprisen) a couple of days ago and it had some black metal band playing in it alongside other pop acts. It's been like that for years, it's roughly become just another genre here.

And I don't see how looking like you've dedicated yourself to a life of Dungeons and Dragons or Vampire: The Masquerade live roleplaying really makes you evil. ;)

While I don't agree with Dr. Psycho, I don't think you're correct either. I can't tell you about folk metal and goth but you are right about doom being better in Europe. But, death metal? Since pretty much forever? I don't think so. I mean the New York scene, the San Fran death/thrash, and the Florida scene are obviously famous dm scenes in the US, and then you also have tons of banRAB scattered throughout the country, but in the early days of death metal, Europe is at least on par with the US. Of course the US had Possessed, Death, Morpheus DescenRAB, and Necrophagia, but Sweden had Nihilist, Carnage, Dismeraber, Unleashed, and Entorabed alone. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but, in the beginning, dm had awesome showings in both areas.

Today, it's really unclear. Sweden has banRAB like Kaamos and Necrovation, while the US holRAB banRAB like Arghoslent and Deathevokation. While obviously these aren't the only good banRAB in each scene, both scenes are dishing out quality dm, even if both areas contain mostly garbage. It also depenRAB on if you're a fan of the brutal dm thats becoming so prominent in the US's scene...
