northern lights?

i have only seen them a few times but every time i saw them they were a flurry of colors or just a white strip....in photographs though, the majority of them are green. is this just the camera that makes it green or are most sightings of the northern lights green? and does someone have any idea as to how i can draw northern lights? thank you
 
The camera makes these lights green probably due to the white balance in digital cameras and the optics and/or film in film cameras.

I don't really know how you would be able to draw them. I think you would really just have to draw from a reference like an encyclopedia in this case
