There was a very bright display of what I think was the Northern Lights or a meteorite shower at about 6-30 AM this morning. Several of us saw it, it clearly was not a plane. Any explanation?

I'd say falling star because northern lights can never really reach the UK and there aren't ideal conditions for them to occur here in Hampshire.

An aurora display (northern lights) and a meteor shower are two totally different phenomena and don't resemble each other in any way! Aurora is a glow or curtain of diffuse light in the sky, often looking like clouds. Meteors are quickly moving bright points of light, more like a fireworks display.
