noooooooo Wizard of Oz remake on the horizon :(

I thought "The Wiz" was OK actually :) :o Some catchy songs and MJ was good as the scarecrow, his performance even seemed tinged with sadness in the part when the crows made fun of him :(

Well that depenRAB what you are looking for in a movie.
The 70s one was far lower budget, more socially aware and more of a commentary on life.
The remake was far more action oriented, but was still smart in places, featured some good moments and was a solid homage of the original.

Both have their place, but I'd call neither a true modern classic. Dawn of the Dead is a classic of its genre, but I don't think the wider populous would call it such.

The Wizard of Oz will always, always be compared to the 39 classic, no matter how different it was to its original content.

Oz has massive scope and potential to become a franchise if they get the right person with a hugely vivid imagination, but they wouldn't touch a remake of any magnitude if it wasn't for this 3D fad.

If they're going to do this, the only person I'd probably trust (but who is not going to be available) to handle Oz is Guillermo del Toro. Doesn't have to direct, maybe he'd be too dark for kiRAB, but to have him produce it would be perfect for this franchise.

Whoever takes Oz on neeRAB to be from the del Toro and Miyazaki side of visual imagination and film making, and not someone from the Chris Columbus side, and as much as I like his work overall, Burton would be a lazy passe choice.

And oh dear God, don't make it a musical (at best use the original music for refrains in the score), but don't throw away what people consider the iconic sides of the 39 film either to go too far back to source. Dorothy's look, and the Wicked Witch of the West look can't be really be changed now. Everything else would be fair game though.

Damn it, gimme $200,000,000 and let me handle it! :D

I'm actually all for a remake or new adaptation of Wizard of Oz. Yes I know the Judy Garland film is a classic, but it's nothing like the book. And if it was done correctly, a good adaptation could follow in suit of the Harry Potter and Narnia films and have a long running series of Oz films with all the books in the series to adapt.

Maybe this time they'll give Dorothy silver slippers instead of ruby ones. :)

If its an adaption of the books then it would be darker and different, but as with all other remakes it could just end up a shot for shot poor imatation of the original, like so many before.

I have to agree that all the re-makes are starting to get out of hand, you would think that the 3 millionth remake of brewsters millions would be the end of it. There are plenty of original ideas out there.
Saying that I did enjoy the muppet reimagining of the Wizard of Oz :o

This is my opinion. Remaking a film that was original source material, such as Robocop, The Hills Have Eyes, The Italian Job etc, is one thing, but if the 'classic' film itself was adapted from material already published, why should that then block anyone else from putting their own spin on it (hello Tim Burton's POTA)? It's a common maxim that 'the film is never as good as the book', often because large swathes are left out due to the time it was made (political, financial, SFX problems for e.g.) What if someone can take that book and turn it into a film that much better reflects the book? Should they be banned from doing so? AFAIC, all films are fair game for a remake. All I would ask of anyone considering it is: can you do it better and/ or sufficiently different to the version it will inevitably be compared to?

Does anyone have any updates on the "Wicked" film they were supposed to be making? I would check its page on IMDb but it's only viewable to IMDb Pro users now.

It's ironic that arguably there's more originality in these re-makes/boots/imaginings than the repetitive fauxrage that seems have become standard almost every time one is announced.

Fair point but can anybody give one example of a remake/reimagining surpassing the original?

Its an ADAPTION of the BOOKS not a remake of the film musical.

I hate the word remake.

Oz has been screaming out for a new , darker, lord of the rings type adaption for years.
