Noob rooting question

Hey guys, can you point me in the right direction to gather information on
1. how to root, steps to take, safeguards to execute to ensure a non-bricked phone.
2. finding, loading and possibly customizing cyanogen

I see a lot of people talking about it, but getting the info to learn about it, is another matter.

I'm planning on rooting it after my two week period is over, but before I do that, I want gain as much info as possible.

Thanks
Mike

The N1 is a very hard phone to brick, haven't heard of one yet. The easiest way to brick it would be to pull your battery during a radio update.
This is the one I used.

This is Cyans wiki.

rooting the N1 is very easy just make sure you read through the directions prior to starting and take your time!! if you get stuck just ask for help

Thanks for the info, I it will provide good reading.
One question, I have an AT&T, will those files included at the beginning of the XDA thread be compatible?

I have the T-Mo version so I'm not sure but I found this at XDA.

Do a little googling to make sure before you start. You might pm this guy, seems he just rooted an ATT N1.

Thanks, that XDA thread you linked seems to indicate I don't need to worry about any radio update, but the very first post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=612858 directs me to load the radio update - hence my confusion.

Anyways I PM'd the OP on the second link so I'll wait and see. I agree with googling/researching before beginning. I want to get my ducks in a row and sure that I have everything in order before I start.

I've updated my radio to the one on Cyans wiki, but your phone is newer and may already have it. There is a new radio for froyo but it doesn't play well with 5.0.7.1, I flashed froyo and the radio and went back to Cyan to quite a few problems, reflashed the older radio and it fixed all of the problems.
