noob Android questions

thanks in advance for any answers.

i have an old iphone 3g and decided to check out the new droids in a few weeks rather than go for an iphone 4. i've been doing a lot of reading about the differences but still have a few questions, if anyone is up for answering.

how do the android email apps compare to the way the iphone handles email? i have a gmail account but almost never use it use it. i use yahoo and comcast email a lot. can it be set up for comcast? can you set it to check for new yahoo and comcast mail automatically? can it check multiple addresses at once? do you have to have all non gmail accounts forwarded to gmail?

are there any decent media apps? i use the iphone as an ipod when biking and through my car stereo. at this point, it's about the only thing i use the car stereo for.

as much as i hate the limits on the iphone, steve jobs, apple in general, itunes and at&t, it does email and media very well. from what i've read, i'd like android much more for pretty much everything else but giving those two things up would be rough.

any input is appreciated.
 
Not sure about yahoo and comcast but I have aol mail set up and when a new email comes in it plays the t-mobile tada tone. I know it works for AOL and should work for the rest, I'm sure some others will chime in. As for media, I use my phone and media through the bluetooth in my car with no problem and with wired or bluetooth headphones you should have no problem when biking. I can't speak about about the Droid as I have a Nexus One but I'm sure some others will chime in shortly. And welcome to the A/C.
 
To be honest, the Android email client is a bit crap compared to the iPhone email app, but at least there are a number of better email clients on the Market.

So long as you have the POP3 or IMAP server addresses for your Comcast and Yahoo email accounts (these are what you would need to use them with the iPhone and Outlook too) then it should work with Android. All email systems use the same protocols other than GMail and Exchange, which we're not talking about here.

Yes, you can check multiple accounts.

No, you do not need to forward everything to GMail. There are two apps on Android - GMail and Email.

You can get your GMail account to grab everything from your other accounts if you so wish though.

I don't know about media apps - surely there's some?

How are you sending the audio to your car stereo? If it's via Bluetooth you may want to confirm the handset you're thinking of buying supports it, as earlier ones were a bit crap at this.
 
Both the stereo's I've had in my truck worked with my Nexus One. It recognizes my phone when I get in the truck. and I can play music within about 5 seconds. Answer phone calls, whatever. All from bluetooth.. So that part of media is fine. I get zero problems using my Nexus One for a music player in my car..

Also like extorian said, there's a gmail, and a email client. I have Gmail because you have to make one with your android phone. but the main 2 email accounts I use are Yahoo, and hotmail. Both of those are setup in the email app on android. When I enter the email app it goes to wherever I was last, weather it was yahoo or hotmail. I can hit back and go to the beginning and choose what one I want to enter. or I can do a combined inbox where I see ALL my new emails.

I love android 2.1+ email client. but my old G1 the email was not very good but it's much improved and I have zero problems with it.
 
Hi first post, I am using a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. I use doubleTwist for music playback and find it really intuitive and simple to use.

I use Moxier for my Calendar and email, this was on my phone out of the box but I'm not sure if its the standard app. It works really well with Exchange. Symbian (E72 and N97) would not connect my X10 connected on the first attempt.

Moxier will work with any email account that uses Exchange, POP3 or IMAP. So you should be fine with Comcast and Yahoo.
 
If you use gmail as a primary email account then android syncs with it seamlessly. As good or better than blackberrys email. But, if you use other email providers, its a bit more of a pain. Overall, android is the best when you are a user of the google apps. In android 2.2, froyo, other email clients work as good as gmail in 2.1 and under. The gmail app/service in 2.2 is much improved over the previous gmail.
 
Welcome to the board.

I'm a former iPhone user and I can say unequivocally that the non-gmail email app for android is aweful!. While over all I love the android platform over the iPhone, this is one area that the iPhone beats the android.

It lacks any serious exchange interoperability especially with the many companies encryption group policies (android 2.2 addresses this to a degree). It also fails to forward html emails, but rather textifes them either showing the html code or just the text email. It does not support push (again 2.2 addresses this to a point).

I use touchdown for my exchange email needs as it supports those business group policies rules, and just live with the other short comings of the email app.

Being a newish android user, there may be other email apps that support forwarding html emails but I'm unaware of them.
