non-"HTC" G1 chargers messing with touchscreen response

Has anyone else noticed that if you connect a charger (AC or car) other than the AC charger that came with the phone, the touchscreen response is off? I cannot complete a hold touch (terminology?) event in order to, for example, move icons around. Instead, the touchscreen does not register the hold and instead just, for example, opens the app instead of allowing me to move the icon.. This also is annoying when pulling up contextual menus that work within applications if you hold down your touch, like in the music app..

I will test this on my wife's G1, but for now, that's what I noticed, anyone else want to try this?

Does anyone have a car charger that works? My old Motorola Razr AC charger and car charger both cause my touchscreen to do this.

Not always...
So I should always waste my money on buying organic food?

Please only respond if you've tried a non-OEM charger and see this issue. If it is a real issue, then, yes, I recommend not necessily OEM chargers, but Chargers that have the same output for the phone. Either that or I have a faulty phone.

I've only used my old Motorola charger, because it is smaller and takes less space in my bag. And I also charge via USB cable.

I have never had the issues you have described

I use my old MDA wall wart and car charger. I didn't feel the need to move my dresser to swap the adapter and it works fine. Also, the T-mo car charger for the G1 is the exact same one as the MDA and Wing. I have not run into any of the issues you have described.

I use my blackberry car charger, usb cable, and wall charger at the office. I haven't notice this at all. The OEM one stays next to my bed.

I also use the old razor ac AND car charger with this problem. Using generic usb's on 2 diff computers without apparent problems on the G1.

USB 1.1 and 2.0 are 5V off of the PC. The OEM charger is 5V 1A, the blackberry charger here at work is 5V 500mA, the Motorola charger my friend Mark has is also 500mA.

USB is a standard so unless you happen to get the charger and it looks like someone made it out of a broken toaster oven with just a USB cable glued onto it the output will be 5V.

I fail to see how this could be an issue from charger to charger unless the non-OEM charger you are happening to use is defective and putting out an undervoltage or overvoltage.

G1, like many Motorolas etc., uses EMU: Enhanced Mini USB. If you look at the input on your phone, you'll see its slightly weird. Usually there should be no charging problems, but some phones...

"Because Enhanced mini-USB provides an extra pin "X", some mobile phone companies have abused this in order to enforce the use of their own battery chargers."

In other words, some chargers with EMU will only work properly with their phones. Data is another issue. I plugged my G1 into the mini USB that came with my PS3 and "Android Phone" popped up on my TV screen. But, though the PS3 "saw" my SD card, couldn't get the images to show. Haven't messed with it much, though.

To view the picture and music files on your PS3 you have to have the right format for the card and also the files in the correct folder. Check your PS3 manual or their website.

I always charge my phone with either a usb/5v dock/charger cradle i got off ebay (it will charge via usb and a 5v power adaptor that are both plugged in) or a cheapo car adaptor i got off ebay (made in china no name charger)

I have never had any problems with my phone or its touch screen (owner sence end of October)

Ok, so... if you go here..

http://www.tracyandmatt.co.uk/blogs/index.php/2006/09/10/htc_hermes_usb_connector_pin_config

... you will find the pin by pin break down of the HTC EMU. Below, under comments, there is one that says Motorola... well it says this:

"I have been studying this and it appears that Motorola's USB charger required a slightly different configuration, B requires a 145K resistor linked to A and not simply shorted."

It may well be that, since the EMU (apparently, unlike the MU) can be "special configured", some will not work on all phones.

ALSO... the complete statement from earlier post is this:

" Additionally, the extra pins may provide for a more draconian form of vendor lockdown. Because mini-USB provides an extra pin "X", some mobile phone companies have abused this in order to enforce the use of their own battery chargers, sold at inflated prices with very high profit margins. Currently, Verizon Wireless is the only company to cripple phones in this manner, colluding with Motorola to put an arbitrary 1.4 volts on pin X, with no other purpose than as an anti-competitive practice. This voltage violates the USB-IF standards, as pin X should either be tied to ground or not connected at all."

Sorry about the underscores, couldn't get rid of them.

Well, I had a serious issue..

I use my RIP MDA charger and USB cord to charge my now RIP G1...
I didn't charge my phone last night was too tired and fell right asleep. Came to work and began to charge it via USB and it was working for the moment but very slow. I deleted some apps and my text messages but the phone memory didn't change.
I tried going to other programs using touchscreen it didn't work AT ALL.
Called TMO and they made me factory reset and now I can no longer get into my G1 because it's a hardware not software defect.

I've used RAZR chargers, generic chargers for random MP3 players, 12v car to USB with random USB cables, random USB cables on several computers/laptops and other phones chargers.

I've used just about every type of charger on my G1 with no problems at all.

While the official charger is a slightly different shape, a standard mini usb works fine & I (among a large group of others) haven't had any issues at all with it not charging/reacting properly.
Just because they changed the socket slightly doesn't mean they crippled it.

Resurrecting old thread:

Happens to me all the time... only overnight though. I've figured out that if you roll the ball a few times and directions, you can shake the fuzzy ness.
