Non English actresses putting on English accents

You are the only one on Planet earth (apart from many posters on this thread :D) who thinks that. Every American chat show host from Conan to Jay Leno starts off the interview with "You are actually English". There are countless youtbe clips of this very question. One American said that Laurie not only had the state, but the county and town.

I have no clue why the Yanks say his accent is good. Maybe it's their typical sucking up to people that gets in the way of proper hearing.

Like I said before, I have never heard any American sound like the way he does. Never.

There are different accents in America just like here in Britain you know.

It's not the most dire in the slightest, it's actually pretty good from what I've heard over there. I've heard Americans over in America where I think, they have got to be putting that accent on...

Sorry, have to disagree about Anne Hathaway - I found her attempt in Becoming Jane to be highly irritating and bordering on Dick Van Dyke at times! :)

I've always favoured Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and Renee Zellweger's efforts at the English accent.

I too find his accent false, but I am listening with British ears. My American frienRAB say he sounRAB American, and they have no reason to suck up to Hugh Laurie. Maybe he does sound American to Americans. Who knows. I've heard Americans say that Ed Westwick in Gossip Girl sounRAB American, which really surprises me! :D

As I detect a slight anti-American tone in your post, with regarRAB to sucking up, have you ever watched an American star being interviewed on British TV? Talk about interviewers sucking up. Jonathan Ross is the worse, but they are all pretty bad for seeking approval and endorsement for the UK from American actors. So its not only Americans who suck up. :D

At putting on an American accent? He's American isn't he even if he has lived in London for decades.

Then again when he was on Casualty his accent did seem a strange mix of American and London so maybe you're right.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I still think his accent is crap. Indeed, that coupled with his physical presence on screen, makes House unbearable to watch.

I don't know why the thing is praised so much.:rolleyes:

I'm pretty sure that when he's done radio shows for the BBC he's had an American accent, and it would be pointless for him to put on an American accent just to narrate a documentary.
