non e/911 - non gps phones- will they be banned?

Hi several of my customers have asked me if non gps phones (the ones that dont have e-911 service) will still be able to be used on the verizon network, after Feb. 17th (when analog service is to be cut).

I sell / service some of the older phones, so two of my customers who both use the kyocera 6035 pda phones have asked me if their phones will still work.

The phones themselves do have a digital band, in other words its not like its an analog only phone (which in that case, obviously wouldnt work).

I know right now, anyone who has a non gps phone is allowed to keep it, but once they activate a gps phone, the non gps phone can not be reactivated. So in other words they arent telling people they have to upgrade there phone- they simply block the non gps phones from being activated. So I am wondering now if on the 17th if they are "forcing an update" for anyone who does not have a gps phone capabilities?

The Feb. 17 digital transition does not effect wireless devices in any way. It was only for analog broadcast TV.

Right now, E911 phones cannot be activated. Customers who are currently using them can continue to use them.

Analog has been banned for cell phones about 6 months- a year ago. It was only required to be gone to the major carriers, so the smaller ones still may use a small analog network.

Ohh ok, thanks for the clarification. Yeah I know Verizon has banned non gps device activations since September 04, so I would have figured in this new "digital update" on feb 17th that maybe they would force non gps phones off but its nice to know they are not doing that.

Makes sence that it only has to do with the tv's, because now that I am thinking about it, the radios are analog but you dont hear anyone saying anything about radios not going to work- so thanks for the info.
