I have allergies and have been taking "non drowsy" OTC pills but still find i am sleepy, is this normal no matter how much they claim meRAB to be non drowsy or is there a certain brand i should by that really doesn't make you drowsy? Also my allergies seem to be from dust, which is inevitable and animals, which i am not getting rid of....so can i take these pills everyday? or does it effect you in the longterm?

Well, since you didn't say which ones you've tried, I'm not sure if this will be helpful but I suggest zyrtec. And try it at night first just in case.

sorry about that, i just tried the generic store brand that seemed to have the exact ingredients in it that the brand name ones did.

There are many different ones like that. Have youtried the generic zyrtec? Generic Claritin? Allegra is prescription but it's also non-drowsy. Some non-drowsy ones have a decongestant that cause them to be non drowsy and some don't. Just lots of options.

And yes, you can take them everyday for the rest of your life...though I might not suggest that for ones with a decongestant as you probably wouldn't need it and it would just make you very jittery.

k i just wanted to make sure that i could take it everyday...basically i have 2 allergy symptoms and find the worst is upon waking....i am constantly stuffed up or sneezing/blowing my nose and the other which isn't as bad is itchy runny eyes. It also depenRAB on which animal i am around. We have ferrets but they are in a different part of the house so i am not around them much but when i take them out to let them run around (when i am not in the room with them:) ) i do get hives and itchy just from touching their fur! but that i can live with. I am just sick and tired of waking up everyday and using a half box of kleenex and sneezing non stop until i take something! Also this just started happening in the last 6 months, i never had a problem until then but i do understand allergies can hit a person at anytime. So with my main symptoms which med do you recommend the most? i don't have to buy generic, i figure they were all the same to be honest with you! i only bought it because i thought i had a cold which seemed to last forever so i figured maybe it wasn't a cold and sure enough as soon as i took an allergy med i was fine, also my cold wasn't like a normal one either. The generic brand i purchased didn't have a "comparison" on the box or anything as to what brand name med it was close to so....but either way brand name is good if you can give me some good ideas for just runny/stuffy nose.

Not all antihistamines are alike. Some are better for certain things. Some dry you out more. And so on. OK, zyrtec is good for animal allergies. It's available OTC. If oyu find it helps and you are taking it all the time, I suggest you purchase it from Canada as it is much cheaper there.

And since you are stuffed up when you wake up, it's probably dust mites as this is a very common reaction to them (they are in the bedding). You can try several things for this; wash your bedding in hot water every week, get casings fro your mattress and pillow that control the dust mites, use a saline rinse before bedtime (willflushout your sinuses) and/or take a benedryl at bedtime. It may be one of this handles it or you may need a corabination of them.

And lastly, I suggest getting allergy testing so you kow exactly what you are allergic to and can formulate the best plan. Good luck.

Thanks again for the suggestions :) i will try the zyrtec...thing with my bed is that we have a brand new mattress and i buy new pillows all the time also wash the sheets and such weekly BUT 3 of the animals sleep in our room at night and they have too (one is a puppy and another dog that HAVE to tell us when they need to go to the bathroom), so maybe thats it? i had an allergy test when i was young and it didn't show much but of course that was a long time ago lol so perhaps i do need a new one :)

Well, their dander has tons of dust mites so that's very possibly the problem. Try the zyrtec at bedtime and see if that helps. Be sure to vacuum the room frequently and getting the bags for the mattress and pillows would also be a good idea. That will keep the mites from getting into the bedding.
