Non-alcohol drinker rude to pay less than {share = total / number} at a restaurant?

Personally, as someone that does not drink alcohol, i do not think that i should be required to chip in to overpriced alcohol. I was at a restaurant and i ordered a meal costing $15 and i drank water. Everyone else was ordering various alcoholic beverages with their meal.

So at the end i gave $20 figuring it would cover my meal + my portion of a tip while at the same time someone else was saying it was $33 per person. I got a couple funny looks so i said "unless they charge me for water."

I didn't feel guilty but i don't know if i was perceived as rude for doing this since i don't really know how other people think in this regard~!
i am not going to swear at them, it was mostly family.

btw - the reason i felt unsure was that it was my cousin's birthday but he asked us to go with him and he was going anyway. it was a large group and 3 of the people did not drink alcohol. i think the other 2 gave more but they were drinking soda so that might add up after a couple refills. i just think the fact that i only drank water dragged down the total bill by a significant amount. i know some people can drop $100 in a snap on a bar tab depending on what you order.

Tell those drinkers to fuck off, they were trying to pass off their check onto you. I hate people like that. They like to drink but can't afford to pay for it. I have been around people like that in the past and I don't put up with it. I embarrassed them instead.

And this is why the real grown ups pay on separate bills.... jeez! I don't think it's rude at all if you didn't drink why should you have to pay? And I'm the sort of guy who will have a beer with a meal while out with friends or family saying that.

It's a sign of maturity to clear up the cost before the bill appears. Even if that means declaring your friend's in charge of the pitchers as you walk into a bar because he is employed and you are a lowly college student (like I do sometimes).

No you were not rude. You paid for what you got & paid your fair share. I think I might have paid the same as everyone else though just for the fact that they are my friends & would have considered it buying them a drink, & being sociable as part of the group*

no, I would've been inclined to do the same (unless I partook in alcohol consumption and got myself a glass of cabarnet sauvignon... yumm =). Good for you!

You are fine.

Order 8 lobsters and 3 bottles of wine next time you go out with them though.
