Nokia's Metal Black E50

That's exactly right. I just got my black trimmed E50 yesterday and it says "black" on the tag with the imei, etc so retailers will more than likely dub it as "black"

Hi yall

I m planning to buy the Metal Black version of E50....But before that i wud like to know if the problems mentioned before have been solved with the latest firmware version or not?

Does the Metal Black E50 have the keypad lighting defect 2?....n is the green indicator led present in the metal black version 2?

Skagen cud u please post some pics of the metal black E50 in low lighting please?

I predict it'll be available the same time the BL-6C cover comes out.

I've been here in HK two days now, and there are electronic shops everywhere (guys, it's a cellphone nerd's heaven). The E50 is always missing from the shops, it's not a big seller or available (but the others are, E/N series even that N71 that doesn't sell that well). The Nokia store of course has it, but not the 100 billion aftermarket joints. (oh yeah, and the AD-15 adapter is nowhere to be found, even at the Nokia store.)

It makes me wonder if Nokia has somehow limited the production run(s) of the E50, not thinking that anyone would want to buy it or something. The average electronics store will have 200 phones, so I'm not talking a by chance thing here -- I keep an eye out for it (so I can judge if the shop is cheap or expensive ).

I had the silver E50 with previous firmware before getting the metal black one - and neither one had any single one of the supposed firmware bugs claimed in E50. Maybe I'm just lucky, but that experience is why I keep asking if these are firmware issues or hardware quality control issues.

Both phones that I have had did not exhibit the lighting issue. But I can tell you uneven lighting is an issue that has been present on Nokia phones for a long time, going back to the 6100 and its cousins. Which is why I have a feeling this phone is in some ways a smartphone descendant of that 6100.

In any case the letters in metal black version are white vs blue on the other versions so that helps with visibility significantly, even if you do come across the problem.

My camera is crap. I tried low light pics on the last batch and they came out blurry. Not worth posting. May try again later.

dunno abt you guys...IMO the silver E50 looks classy and more sophisticated than the black in the flesh. the pics on the net sing a different song...btw...the black edition has been selling here in India for ages, but dont sell as fast as the silvers.

My metal black (sourced in germany) has firmware version 06.41.3.0 (dated 24-10-2006)

g12bey, what funcional differences do you see?

Thanx 4 the reply dude....but u din mention abt the missed call/msg led indicator...is it present in the black metal version?...i know the area around the joystick is black...but i cud see a lining of white light surrounding the joystick area....is that utilzed?

Do try n post the pics buddy...that wud be helpful

Yes, that is identical on all E50 versions. You get a flashing green led around the joystick when you missed a call or have messages waiting.

As the guy above saidn, indicator works on all versions.

In silver/black and silver/white versions the joystick surround is clear white plastic that glows blue when indicator underneeath comes on.

In metal black, a white joystick surround would have been to garish and would nullify the all-black effect. So they made it mainly black, with a discreet white zebra strip in there.

So when the indicator underneath comes on the white strip glows white and the edge of the surround glows white ie same colour as the keys glow when they are on. Within the white lit areas you will see a brief green blip when you miss a call.

All works fine. Not an issue.

The pics I posted on page 2 of this thead show the lighting pattern - particularly the last one (sideways pic) where you can see the LED lighting up the white/black joystick surorund. Have another look.

Or is it that you guys just need more metal black E50 "phone porn"? :-0

Alright. Like I told you its a shite digicam, not an SLR....
