Nokia X6 16GB available for pre order @ Nokia USA

Sounds like the same battery cover as the 5530.

But despite the battery cover, the 5530 is built quite well, solid. I've handled the X6. Its fairly solid too.
 
You know what killed it for me? The video review I saw where the big back battery cover comes off, and it's this floppy, thin plastic, chintzy thing. Killed it. If that part of it is badly built, I thought, what about the rest of the phone?
 
Although I know it's technically a smart phone, to me the X6 screams, "feature phone for teenager". Those pink and blue colors don't help its cause.

Would it have killed it to have an all metal casing like the Nexus or even partly metal like the N97 Mini?
 
The phone is very solid.. I think there are like 6 locks you need to snap.. 3 locks on each side. and not to mention another 2 at the bottom.

Touch is better on the X6 compare to the 5800 IMO.. But then again I'm comparing Capacitive VS Resistive.. Just an overall experience I guess.
 
I really haven't seen much on the X6 regarding performance, any RAM or FW issues, camera quality, etc. It sounds like an upgrade in some features vs. the 5800 - better camera, capacitive touchscreen, 16GB internal memory (but no microSD card slot) - for about $100 more ($350 vs. $280 on Amazon.com today). Any X6 owners out there that can provide some input?
 
I can't comment on the 5800 for comparison as I've never owned one but I have an X6. My daily work unit is a Blackberry STORM with the latest firmware (vast improvement) which I've owned for 1.5 years. So I am familiar with touch screen phones.

So far my X6 with the firmware upgrades has been stable. The Capacitive touch works great, very iphone like (compared to my son's). If you haven't used a touch screen, it may seem odd at first but with experience you can get very good with it. It has a nice feel to it.

The GPS is great, and this is coming from a seasoned Garmin user. While I'll still keep my Garmin 765T for my car, from a mobile or walking perspective this little GPS unit works well. It has both an internal receivier (no cell signal required) and A-GPS (signal required). The internal works well, thus making it a cost effective option, something I like as this is my travel phone.

The 16gb built in memory offers lots of space for music or other media. The camera works well as a cell phone camera for general photos. If high quality is your need, get a 12mp digital camera.

I love the Wi-Fi option. Again, another great feature for the traveler looking to minimize phone costs.

Build quality is good. I suspect the "flimsy" comments are coming from internet armchair critics and not real users. The plastic back is thin yet sturdy and clips on with 6 catches.

I'm not a gamer and my life isn't ruled by cell phones. They are tools that help me manage my day. I conducted an exhaustive search of phones and had no loyalty to any one brand. From a cost and feature perspective, the X6 meets my needs with low cost options that will help minimize my cell phone costs as I travel.

Please consider that my focus was on obtaining full features for foreign travel purposes at minimal cell carrier costs. Whereas I use to carry my Blackberry (business) cell phone (personal) a digital camera, my Ipod and my GPS, I can now carry one X6 phone. I also don't have to explain all those adapters and calbes to airport security. :) If your needs are different, I suppose there will always be a better phone option out there.

Whether the X6 is good or not, that aside, it's priced all wrong.

On most sites it sits at around $450. For comparison, the AT&T compatible version of the Google Nexus One is ~$520. Both are unlocked and unsubsidized.

Given a choice, which of the two do you think most people would go for?
 
I've had the X6 for 4 days now and it's a big so what. Not impressed in the least. I'm starting to get a tad tired of Nokia UI all together at this point as well.

Thanks for the feedback on the X6. After posting, I did find a pretty thorough review on AAS. Guess I wasn't looking hard enough.

I'm still undecided about making any move at this point. My N82 is a solid "convergence" device (GPS, camera, web, occasional games, etc.) for my needs. I mainly use wifi for any internet access needs, so 3G isn't a big deal for me.

I also don't need the latest and greatest OS or UI. My main reason for looking at a new phone is to try something with a larger screen, and maybe try to understand what all the fuss over touchscreens is about.
 
Then I would try the N97 Mini...I too didn't want to get away from a "standard" device, but the Mini has been decent for me. In the end though, it seems like a product that was introduced to hold people over until they can bring out another (potential) super-phone.
 
Just adding my 2 cents; I obtained an X6 this past week and its pretty neat in the software performance aspects. I wish my N97 were as fast, and could remain so with the transitions on. I'm not a fan of the build-quality as it feels too loose, but it does seem like it would be able to take a beating. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with it.
