Nokia trimming the "fat"...?

1800 to lose their jobs globally...
you knew changes were coming to make the company leaner and more efficient...
still, don't like hearing about people losing their jobs....

http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/21/nokia-reports-improved-earnings-for-q3-2010-will-still-streaml/

on another note, they are using only QT to do any development from now on for Meego and Symbian..
I thought that was the idea from the start...?
the same report says there won't be a symbian^4, it'll just be symbian....
how are we going to distinguish major releases and updates..?

http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/21/nokia-refines-development-stategy-adopts-html5-in-qt-and-ends-s/

oh well, looks like 2011 is going to be a busy year @ Espoo.....

Since the company didn't specify 2Q 2011 yesterday, just "a 2011 event", I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't get rolled out until this time next year, holiday season 2011.

I also read over at Forbes, per one of their sources, that Nokia was having trouble making Symbian 4 run on a new SOC they were using, an Ericsson chip I believe, so the OS was delayed internally until 2012. So maybe Elop took a look at the situation, said screw it, and revamped their whole strategy. That's what it looks like to me, at least.

The gist I got from the conversations piece was to stop focusing on the platform, Symbian^3, Symbian^4, MeeGo, to drive features, applications, etc. But focus on QT. If you can do it in QT, they'll deliver it immediately instead of waiting for a new version of the OS.

I'm interested in where the cut the jobs from.

That would make sense.

Symbian^4 should be a major core revision, and current users shouldn't have to wait for UI updates, applications, and other user experience enhancement for revisions to the Kernel.

I know recently they decided that when Symbian^4 they would return to minor build revisions (4.1, etc). Looks like they got that a little early lol.

rarely do people just up and leave cushy jobs, especially in such an uncertain economy. what happens when new management is brought in is to clean house of those that failed. Nokia smartphone management failed and they had to go. they did not create winning products or profits for nokia. when you make the big bucks you are held accountable Sooner or Later.

yes the old strategy was flawed and it was overly optimistic. this guy has to get real and this is a first step. I suspect symbian is EOL and meego is where it's headed. most nokia smartphones by 2012 will be able to run meego. the problem is meego is a huge gamble.

Could not agree with you anymore about how sad it is to see people losing their jobs. :(

IMO The renaming is just going to confuse people more than anything. Kinda feels like a lame political move on Elops's part.

We'll see what "Improvements" the N8 actually gets (probably nothing like the S^4 hype)...

Not only a gamble but what will Nokia do until 2012? As this article says http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/10/22/symbian_wound_down/, the SF may go broke soon and if Nokia is cutting Symbian programming jobs as well, then development may just dry out.

We already had a one year gap (2010) without putting out a good fight, If this goes on for another year, Gartner will have to revise their predictions that Android will be number one in 2014. It will be more like 2012.

Nokia needs a lifeline until Intel can deliver their processors for Meego.

Are they gonna go to bed with the enemy so that they can still make money or just stay in bed alone until they are out of their depression and start over from the third or fourth position?

Man, I should have shortened Nokia when I thought that some insiders were already doing it, I would've made enough to buy an N8 by now...

From GSMArena:

"Next Nokia announced that you won't be hearing any more talk of Symbian^4 from them. The improvements that were planned for Symbian^4 will be introduced as soon as they become available - so instead of one big release, it's going to be more of a series of iterative updates to the existing platforms.
That means that if you buy a Nokia device now, you won't need to wait for all the parts of the new interface to be ready and you will be able to get some of them sooner. Plus there is no risk of some devices not getting a Symbian^4 upgrade anymore."

So N8 will get all the improvements that ware planed in S^4 phones (new UI).

I don't think it means "cancelled"... if anything doesn't this boost chances for N8 owners bot having obsolete software sometime next year? considering the Nokia we know wouldn't push an actual symbian ^4 update to these phones

I hope they drop the name scheme while they're at it, the ^ symbol isn't even easily accessed from any mobile keyboard

That does seem valid, however Nokia did say that Symbian^3 devices would not be upgradable to Symbian^4, and now they are saying that there isn't going to be a symbian^4, but the features that was intended for Symbian^4 will not be added to symbian^3 devices (they never stated what features was coming though).
Wasn't symbian^4 suppose to be a completely revamped Operating system?
Now its just an add on to Symbian^3.

I guess N8 sales or pre-sales weren't what they were hyped up to be, and this is Nokia's way of saying it ok to buy the N8 because there isn't going to be a new symbian os.
This and the announcement that a Meego device isn't going to be released at the end of 2010 but sometime in 2011.

I never really agreed with Tbong, but the writing seems to be on wall.
I believe that Elop is cleaning house and making way for a honeycomb nokia device in the 2h of 2011

I suggest everyone starting reading the comments on various message boards posted by SF employees... it's bad.

Basically, anyone involved in the guts of Symbian is being made redundant. People have been sent home, offered packages, etc. There will be no real further core development of Symbian...

Honestly I never understood the point of the S^3 and S^4 branding. Why not just do one new version of Symbian at a time? What was supposed to be the difference between the two anyway? And the ^ was a horrible idea; awkward to type and pronounce. Why not just call it Symbian 3 and be done with it? Anyway abandoning S^4 just shows what an incoherent mess Nokia's OS strategy is. Why on earth would developers waste their time with Nokia when the company itself doesn't seem to have a clue what its strategy is.

Having said all that I suppose giving up on S^4 could be beneficial if Nokia concentrates on producing one top-class OS: Meego. I have thought all along that Nokia's huge mistake was to divide its resources between too many different OS's: S60v5, Maemo 5, S^3,S^4 and Meego. On balance cutting down that clutter is a good idea. However if they don't hit Meego out of the park now, their OS strategy is doomed and they will face a stark choice next year: adopt Android/Windows or become irrelevant in the smartphone game.

Nokia relavant? Nokia hasn't been relevant in the smartphone world in some time.
Say what you will about Sony Ericsson, motorola, or samsung succumbing to android,
at least they have direction
