Nokia N95 Variation Guide for Noobs

what i'm trying to do is get a phone right now that won't get outdated in the next 3-6 months... meaning that i want to have a phone with HSDPA for America or other new features so that i can use it when US launches 3G for tmobile...
 
These new posts from confused S60 first-timers are getting really redundant, so I think it's time for a quick reference guide for people to read before mashing that New Thread button. Hopefully, this will clear up a lot of the confusion from people having a hard time finding information about these three phones.

Bear in mind, all variations of the N95 have a standard set of features that do not change from model to model (5mp camera, GPS, WLAN, etc.,). This chart is not all inclusive to every feature of each variation, but only to those features that separate them from one another.

Nokia N95-1 (Classic)
  • Quadband GSM, 3G 2100 for Europe
  • Available in Silver/Plum, Silver/Sand, Silver/Graphite, Silver/Red, and Silver/Pink color variants
  • 30mb of RAM on boot with newest firmware
  • 2.6" 240x320 screen
  • 950mAh battery
  • Camera lens cover present
  • MicroSDHC memory card slot expandable up to 32gb (current largest card available is 8gb)
  • Flat, black media keys on secondary slide out keypad

Anyone else notice a typo on some of the N95-3 boxes?

"For use on GSM85/9/18/19 UMTS 1900 networks."

What about the 850MHz UMTS? Oh well, I guess Nokia decided to pull an HTC Touch (people with the so-called tri-band HTC devices will understand this joke).
 
You'll get used to it. It's actually much better to use than most other keypads out there, believe it or not. Only on the N95 have I been able to get up to 70 WPM. I've never had speed like that with any other phone keypad, and I've used them all.

As for trying to get a phone that's not outdated, you're going to be waiting a while for a flagship Nokia with 1700 for 3G. There's barely anything announced for that frequency as it is, much less an S60 device. For what's available now, buying the N95-3 or the current 8gb will hold you over easily for the next 6 months if you're not planning on switching carriers. I bought the N95-3 for the 3G, but I still haven't brought myself to switch to AT&T. I am just really happy with T Mobile's service I guess.

The bottom line is that you should strike while the iron's hot. If you keep waiting for technology to get better, you'll never buy anything.
 
This is an excellent post and helped a lot of people including myself.

Would be perfect if it could be updated to reflect changes in v20 firmware for N95-3 and N95-4 if the author have some spare time.

i sold my bberry curve last week thru craigslist and was rockin an old nokia in the meantime while waiting for the n95... now that this story is over with, i still needed a decent phone to rock that i don't feel ashmed to pull out in public.. well check this out...
i was at compusa last night just looking at all the closeout items as they are going out of business and i came across their cell phone kiosk. u wont believe this but i picked up a brand new sealed in the box motorola razr 2 v8 for tmobile for only $239.99! this phone i know retails for about $349.99 or somthing... i've been playing with it all day... and all i can say is WOW... i'm impressed! i didn't expect this phone to be that feature rich... i guess i'll rock this for a lil bit till i find a good nokia and sell it right back at my cost... :)
 
Okay, this leads to my stupid question of the day. I've noticed that some ebay sellers go out of their way to say things like, "This is the China version. It doesn't have WIFI or GPS." So the question: do these sellers just not know what they're selling?

In fact, it was reading these auction descriptions that made me read this thread in the first place.

Not that I don't believe you, I'm just confused. :confused:

Just make sure it doesn't have a touch screen because they're clearly fake. And don't buy from eBay unless it's a reputable seller such as x1387 or phonesource-usa.
 
The N95 8GB has smaller front D-Pad keys. Although I have noticed to negatives while using them.

Actually, quite the opposite, I like them.
 
As soon as I get the rest of the information about the NAM 8gb, I'll update the original post. Everything I've read thus far indicates that it also carries the -2 number just like the original, in which case no guide will protect any forum from N95 newb threads.
 
The so-called "China version" is a ripoff, made by "NOKlA" (the second last letter is a lowercase "L", not an uppercase "I": "Nokla"). It has a touch-screen, a 2MP camera (not 5), no GPS, no WIFI, and larger dimensions. Of course, being what it is, it is a popular "for sale" item on eBay.

Samething with the "CECT 168" - also branded as "iPhone". It runs Windows Mobile, for starters.

Then there is the Nintendo W? (note that the "?" is drawn with a square font, so it looks kindof like two lowercase "i"s...).

Of course, these are all made in China, so beware of lead content...
 
I just have a question concerning the n95 8gb....

Is the keypad lightning blue or white? because i clearly saw in a youtube video that i was blue, but in gsm arena picture, it shows as white.
personally i find the blue backlighting much better looking and original
