Nokia N80 with 4 GB Mini SD card

personally, i dont care if you are trying to get free advertising or not, what matters most is you tell us how did you conduct the test, give us the details of your testing and if possible photos... to say that a 4GB card works when there is only 8MB filled up in a 4GB card is not a very extensive testing... if you do work for topram, then you owe it to us consumers, to do a more thorough testing before making a conclusion... no data, means no testing...

just remember that if indeed your card works, there will be a bunch of us fully recommending your card to a whole lotta people here and other forums... so, yea i think we have the right to demand...
 
seriously, they must be retarded. i would think someone would be able to come up with a workaround solution, if not nokia themselves though.
 
Topram, in addition to letting us know the results of your testing with different firmware versions of N80 and possibly other phones (I have an APAC version of E70 with firmware 2.0618.07.10), can you also let us know how is the Topram miniSD formatted? Is it by any chance FAT32 with 4kB cluster size? A handful of people posted that some of their new S60v3 devices did recognize and worked fine with cards formatted in this way. Thank you in advance.
 
I still cannot believe this is the limitation because BOTH the SE w950 & Nokia N91 have a HDD internally supporting 4GB. I'm thinking the file system in how it supports EXTERNAL memory then is limited to FAT16; not allowing FAT32. As both those devices show the HDD as 1 memory unit and NOT 2 seperate units.

I'm using a Smart(Dumb?)phone - please don't hold that against me!

I have a 2GB miniSD card (Corsair) that was working fine until I formatted it on a Win XP machine using FAT.
After this the card's memory was cut in half. It reads as a capacity of 1.92GB but only 900+mb are available.

Other than formatting the card, where did I go wrong?

Tried FAT32 - Didn't work, however...

...I just found a related link http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/634358.html which lead me to http://www.ritekusa.com/ebpage.asp?page=Driver%20download%20-%20150X%20Secure%20Digital and Ritek's, seemingly, wonderful "fix program" for both Win and Mac users .

It worked for me, so far.
It's so easy and simple that I'm afraid something is going to go wrong.

lame. im waiting till someone can prove that 4gb will work with a ppc to buy one. somebody must know a way! its not even that complicated.

is it possible for firmware upgrades to use fat32 or is this a hardware thing?
 
Could you have two 2GB partitions on one card? Would the phone recognize two partitions on one card? Hrmmmmmm...... ? Anyone willing to give it a shot?

I would but I "only" have a 2GB card :-)

HOLD THE PHONE!

Even though Win XP recognizes the "fixed" card as having a capacity of 2GB when I try to add more than half the size of the card I get and error code stating "Cannot copy file: the parameter is incorrect".

So it seems as though the program fools you into thinking that you have regained the original 2GB capacity but "it ain't so". At least in my case.

I'll keep playing around with it and will reply if a solution is found.
 
There are two problems with doing this though:
1) Partitioning a flash drive (that's what a memory card in a reader is to a computer) requires some specialized software. The Disk Manager in Windows won't do it as it doesn't see the flash drive as a disk and Partition Magic won't see it as a disk either. I'm talking some custom written industry specific application. This is your first almost unsurmountable hurdle.
2) Provided that you somehow got hold of this specialized software that would allow flash drive partitioning and managed to create two 2GB FAT16 partitions on it, the actual chances of the phone OS being capable of recognizing both of those partitions simultaneously and assigning two drive letters to them is rather small.
I think we'll just have to wait until Nokia "builts-in" FAT32 support into their phone software to be able to use the 4GB cards.
 
No offense but that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. OF COURSE your trying to promote your product here. How would posting that your "4 gig" will work be a waste of time in the #1 Mobile forum on the web. Hmmm..how many members does hofo have..right now it's 552,089. That's half a mil if I do my math correct. Now refresh our memory why advertising that your product works and is available to half a million people would be a waste of time....not to mention the god knows how many "non-members". If it works then that's great as I've got an N80ie heading my way and would love to cram a 4 gigger in their but please dont insult us by saying that your not SELF PROMOTING.
 
I read your post, you seems very pro in these test and phone things ... If you have a N80 and would like to get a 4GB miniSD from me, I will consider loan or even give it to you for free for testing purpose, are you in the USA ?

I prefer to give some one a card and can do all the test (have time and willing to), instead been blamed here (by some green face ) that I am advertising our own card.

To answer to your question, please refer to my other post, I test on firmware v.3.0617.0.6 4GB miniSD format as FAT32, I record and take pictures (near 4 - 500MB so far, the N80 is working smoothly), I will keep load up till pass 2.5 -3GB, and provide more info if you love to know.

4GB on N80, firmware v3.0617.06 (N80 from ~TIM)
Test on N80, after heavly pictures taken and video recording
pass 2.21 GB in size.
 
hey guys, what about4gb on the n73? atleast the new Internet or Music Editions since, the ME already comes with a 2gb...is it possible to upgrade to 4gb despite the limitations
 
actually, there are some people who were able to format their 2GB miniSD cards to FAT32 with 4kb cluster size and still be able to use it with their E61, and even claims to produce better sound (link below)... i just dont know why it cant be done the same with a 4GB card...

...and a very good point brains....I would like to see that card loaded with 2 gigs of high quality pics, some videos, and as many applications you can throw on it. Let's see how sluggish the UI becomes or doesnt become and see how quickly the gallery opens with 2 or 3 gigs of data on it. Simply slamming it in the phone and putting a couple of mp3's on it is far from assuring us that it works...and I too could care less if she's advertising, just dont BS us by saying she isnt.
