Nokia N80 Camera Quality

The camera takes decent pics. It's a still camera so it doesn't really need to focus or anything. It takes pics faster than phones that have autofocus but not as sharp as them.

I found the cam very mediocre, it takes landscape pics reasonably well but pics that require focussing on an object its appalling compared to phones with autofocus such as N73, N93 etc

I think that's a good answer right there.. The n80 is one of those "we wanted to get a 3mp to market, damn the torpedoes" type of cam... it's 3mp, but honestly there are MANY 2mp that take better shots... mp's aren't everything.

However, that being said, it's not HORRIBLE, and still better than any 1mp

Name one 2mp cam that takes better shots than the n80. I've had both the w800i and w810i along with the motorola v3x, and although the se's are good for 2mp cam's, they're not nearly as good as the n80. I also have the n73 which obviously has teh better cam, but its inability to capture the correct color (unless in broad daylight) is very bothersome. Also, the camera focuses only in the middle, so if you take a picture of your dog, his face has to be in the middle causing his rear end to be out of the pic, either that or focus on his neck/shoulder area and it doesnt focus on the face at all. The n73 is quite nice, but not as good as the SE k790.

In just about every way possible, the SE k750i takes better shots than the n80. They are clearer, and the lack of autofocus is very apparent on the n80. The N80 can't handle any kind of non-standard lighting worth a damn compared to the k750.

I've owned both, and believe me I'd take an n80 over the k750 in just about every other way... but the pictures speak for themselves, the n80 can't compete.

well im happy wit the 3mp cam, everywhere Ive read say that the n73 is better but i hate candybar style phones so thats the reason why I didnt pic up that phone and instead the n80.

I came from a phone that was years old, vga only, so anyting would be a big plus to me. The only complaint i have is of the slow pace it takes to take one pic. Especially if you want to take more than one pic in like an action type movement its hard. Also, if you dont hold the phone perfectly still the pic comes out blurry. Other than that, viewing the pics on my computer (when the pics are taken under the right conditions/settings) I have no complaints. In some landscape pics, you do see fuzziness in the color but that can be due to the settings and taking a pic far away. but Im happy wit it.

I've owned both the N80 and N73... Let me say if you don't need wifi then don't buy the N80... I hated every second I had that phone. The slide mechanism was terrible. I've never seen such a poor design in my life. Bar phones aren't that bad. The N73 makes up for the form with a huge screen. Another big selling factor on the N73 is the battery life. N80 has horrible battery life. Seriously... I wouldn't even trade my N73 for 2x N80's.

Who doesn't need wifi? The camera on the N80 is as good as the k750/w800. It takes better pics though at 2mp resolution. I think the lens is a bit too small and the sensors are just a tad too feeble to cope with 3.2mp. Colour reproduction is excellent.

I know one phone Motorola i880 it has a 2MP cam. You have to see how good the photo
looks for a phone. It not a gsm phone but man it a good cam.

ummmmm.....all I can say is wow!! Those are really really crisp pictures. those 2mp pix flat out smoke my Sony D1 5mp cam. I've never thought much of motos cameras but that's pretty unbelievable quality. I know those are minimized but I would think that an N95 reduced to the same size would be hard pressed to beat some of those photos. Pretty unreal!!!

These are the a pretty good representation of how good that camera can be.

I have had believe it or not 3 N73's ... the silver, the brown, and the ME. I still have the ME but am going to sell it off because of Creakiness and instability. All three of my n73's with firmware upgrades have consistently given me "sim registration failed" errors few times a day. Not only that, the camera freezes up on these phones as well. I really tried to love the n73 and actually i still do love the phone, but i just cannot use it as an everyday phone. Maybe weekender.

But seriously, i know the n80 may not be the tightest slider made, but do not bring in design when comparing the 2... the n73 by far is one of the worst phones i've ever owned when it comes to design and build quality. Not saying the n80 is great, just saying the n73 design has to be one of the worst, with the 4 buttons surrounding hte keypad that cant hold itself up against the housing to keep itself from creaking, to the camera lid thats almost as long as the entire back of the phone which obviously over time gets loose and rattles. Not sure how they came up with these ideas, but if they could somehow fix these issues, the n73 would be the bomb for sure.

Honestly, im not sure about keeping the n80ie either, i have to play with it more, but i will say this. If you want the better cam, go with the n73, if you want a "cooler/hip" look go with the n73 (ME!), if you want wifi and a more professioinal looking phone go with the n80ie, if you want a more stable phone go with the n80ie, if you want an incredibly sharp screen go with the n80.

I havent noticed anything horrible about the n80ie battery life yet. I guess maybe cause i use wifi only when im at home where there is a charger handy. Otherwise when using gsm mode and wlan scanning is off, the phone is normal on battery life.

I'll report back if theres anything i notice.

after playing with the n80 for almost a week, i think i'm ready to trade it in.. lol.
think i might try out the N73 next..

but on the topic of the N80's camera quality..
anyone want to share their settings that yield better results than the 'automatic' setting..

My N73 seems fine. Not much creaking. The camera cover is ok atm but even if it does get loose it can easily be replaced. Most phones with camera covers tend to get loose anywayz. The only phone I can think of where the camera cover didn't really get loose was the SE W800.

Nokia is known for their bad build quality. The materials they use are kinda crappy if you think about it. The plastic feels cheap, looks cheap and creaks. Then again most phone companies make phones that creak anyways. If it has plastic it will creak because that's the way there are unless that plastic is thick. The slide on my N80 wiggled a lot. It didn't slide to nicely on the rails and would jiggle from side to side. Any phones with moving parts will exhibit signs of loosening over time. Moving parts will eventually get loose.

Well, im sure all phones can vary from phone to phone. It just so happened for me that all three phones had too much build issues. The white/brown one was the best but after awhile it got bad. On one of them, after about a couple months, if i didnt have it in the holster and put it in my shirt pocket, the camera lid would rattle pretty loud everytime the phone vibrated. Hopefully you dont have to go through that. But even worse than that was the sim card fail errors... I missed like 10 phone calls one time cause i had no idea the phone wasnt working and i had no clue till i took it out to check email. But its obvious how much i loved the phone even with these issues and gave it another try after try, but eventually, i didnt wanna spend 500 on a phone that couldnt keep connected to the network... I never found out how to fix it.
Everything you say about the n80 is true. The sliding mechanism is pretty horrid. Doesnt stay shut, pretty good amount of give side to side. Not to mention the phone is darned thick. But this phone the (IE) atleast doesnt seem to have any software issues that i've noticed.

If they can make the n80 thinner with a better slider, i think it would be the perfect phone for many ppl, and if they could make the n73 with solid build quality, it would the the perfect phone for everyone else on the other side. Personally I would own both if that was the case. But its not the case, so i'll sell my n80i along with my n73me and wait for something else. lol

The N80 is pretty good for the features that it offers, although I would have liked better battery life.

The camera is also pretty good without AF, but if you look carefully there's a bit of a bluish/purplish haze on the photos. That's also what i found with it when i had it.

But overall, a very good phone.
