Nokia N8 Unlocked-Unbranded now available in Canada

And here I was thinking it will be a while before newegg.ca gets it in, as they don't even carry all the Nokia phones that newegg.com lists. But I been searching their site each day, and sending them suggestions, asking them to carry it. I was going to wait for a $450 price, but ahhh, I just got to have it. Early Christmas gift to myself.

Anyway, I will save the entire cost of the phone, over the next two years, by going with Wind Mobile, instead of the absurd 3 year contract phones that all the major networks charge here.

Browsing should be nice compared to your e72. I had a e63 for about a week, before I sold it on ebay, as I could not adjust to browsing on that tiny screen. When Nokia gets the new browser out, it should be an awesome device for that.

No doubt! Qt 4.7, new browser, symbian updates. The N8, along with the others in the S^3 family is a great platform for Nokia to work off of.

NCIX probably bought it from Nokia for $550, had it shipped to their Blaine, Washington pickup location...brought it into Canada and marked it up to match other Canadian gougers. I live near them so I wouldn't have to pay shipping, but the price is still ridiculous...I'd also prefer a blue. I wonder if Nokia Canada would honor a warranty on that?

I finally got my replacement N8 from newegg.ca, and will list what I went through in regards to the RMA, in case anyone has to go through this, and would like to know what's involved.

Mailed it back to newegg.ca on November 1st, via their UPS shipping label that they sent, from Vancouver to Mississauga, they had it for three days, confirmed that it was dead, and sent me a new one on Nov. 8th, via Purolator ground shipping from Industry, California (LA area) and arrived yesterday on the 12th.

So far everything works, and will sign up with Wind Mobile today, taking advantage of their 50% discount for the first six months on their calling plans. I will list my initial impressions with Wind's network later, before moving on to the other N8 threads to share my impressions on the phone.

Well I was worried, trying to get the device to start, by pressing repeatedly on the power button for the past hour, while it was charging. Note, I also have no sim card yet.

Well, it finally booted up!

Awesome screen! Looks beautiful. I played that Tron trailer that's installed in the device, cranked up the sound, and was grinning from ear to ear while watching. The quality of the screen and sound is amazing. The pictures they have installed on the device is also stunning to look at.

LOL Inept ya caught me, its a small world it would seem even on the interwebs :P. I can honestly say no crashes or weirdness here at all, its been really great, many things are very similar coming from my 5800 but most of the anoying things are gone, double tap etc. As for the popup notifications, can't say that it bothers me much but yeah that isn't really new coming from the 5800 lol. Compared to many of the other phones i have been messing around with recently i still stand by its a great phone, and the build/feel is second to non.

Consider what doing the aforementioned would entail. They pay the $549 retail price, not wholesale, and then there is US tax. I think that for WA it'd total around $50. On top of that, when they bring the device across the border, they would pay HST. It's very easy to see where they get the $740 price from - it's a straight-up 10% markup on the likely cost of the item after it's brought across the border and tax is paid on it. NCIX isn't a big winner here - the tax collector is. Double dipping is double sweet.

I put the notifications widget on one of my home screens and there are no more incoming text popups. It shows texts in there and also delivers a little slide-down in the top left no matter where you are. This is 1000x better.

Also, the browser really is horrendous. Reviewers weren't kidding - Nokia cannot deliver improvements here fast enough. If you're rendering a complex site, be prepared to wait forever and for your phone to be unresponsive... Just like the Symbian of 3 years ago. Keyboard isn't a big deal, IMO. I rather like it and the haptic feedback is nice. Portrait T9 is ridiculous, but still perfectly useful with predictive on. Nevertheless, bring on Swype.

Seems like if you have GPS location on in the camera, when you start the camera with no GPS lock the application will crash. Then it will start seeking GPS and you can re-start the camera and proceed to take pictures. Minor bug.

Seems like the reviews out there for the device are generally quite accurate with regards to its shortcomings and highlights. The shortcomings are fixable but the highlights are hard to match with other devices so it's a good package. $450 is a very compelling price. $550 is less so, but not unacceptable.

Can you explain a bit more exactly what you did to get it booted up?

I now have an RMA and return UPS label emailed to me from Newegg, plus they are already sending me a replacement N8. But if there's anyway to get this to boot I'll see if I can cancel the replacement before it's shipped.

I just don't understand why Nokia Canada won't sell them unlocked like their american counterparts, makes absolutely no sense at all.

I noticed that SN Traders is now selling the N8 for $599 (they give you $50 off for a local pickup). Now I find myself torn between SN Traders and Newegg.ca. I know some people on this forum have had various issues with SN Traders. The only issues I've read about Newegg.ca have been the issue of a batch of N8 arriving DOA. I'd appreciate feedback from anyone who has dealt with Newegg.ca or SN Traders. If you were in my shoes, who would you give the business to?

I used it a few weeks ago in the pouring rain here, when I pulled it out of my pocket, it was practically wet from the very humid air, and also used it later last week when we had the very unusual sub 10C weather here. Ice cold to the touch, but worked great in the cold. So far, Vancouver approved. :)

mrstarr, as you can see, regarding your concerns above, very pocket friendly, and you will see, that the battery is very good.

I did an RMA with NewEgg just last Wednesday. I did an advanced RMA where they shipped me a new one right away and I had 30 days to return my defective one before they charge my credit card. I will be getting my replacement on Monday.

Same process, attach UPS shipping label, drop it off at a UPS store, and wait for NewEgg to receive it.

I think that "a batch of N8 arriving DOA" is more than a bit strong.

I think I was the only person to get a true DOA N8 from Newegg.CA, someone (1) returned an N8 with problems, but that barely makes a "batch".

Newegg.CA handled my return most efficiently, I got my replacement N8, which is working just fine, no problems at all to date, on the very same day they received my returned N8; pretty good service if you ask me!

My dealings with them are such that I'll now be using them rather than TigerDirect.CA as my primary web place to go, prices being similar.
