Nokia N73 can't disable UMTS?

I've read you can disable the UMTS option on the N73 and N95 and other N-series devices.

I searched hofo already for "n73 umts disable" and "n73 umts" with no luck...

Google results usually suggest...
application key, tools, settings, network \ network mode. I don't have a network mode option in settings or in network...

anyone else have this problem? I'd like to save the battery some more since the UMTS is 2100MHz and thus won't work in the States.

Erm.. I DO have the Network option.. Google's results work 100% for me, and I have done that ever since I got my N73ME to preserve battery life. I am going back to that option right now and I see it there.

Are you using N73 regular?

The firmware on the N73 from the Nokia flagship stores disables this feature so the phone is always set to dual mode. That's why I asked.

got my n73 from amazon.com. No idea where the seller got it from (store, wholesaler, truck-haw-, etc.)

but if flagship stores always set it to dual mode, I guess that's my answer then.

Does the phone "give up" if it can't find UMTS signals and power off the UMTS chip or is it always looking?

I imagine it's always looking, because infrastructure-wise, I can't think of an easy way for the phone to "know" it's time to turn on the UMTS unless it's polling every now and then.

actually now the next logical step is...

is it worth trying to flash it to a non-flagship rom? and by worth I mean risk, ease of going back if I have to, any features that might not be present?

Not really a risk if it's able to be done with NSU. If you have a firmware earlier than 3.705, you can change your product code with NSS to a generic vanilla Euro and update it with NSU.

lmao...how much sense does that make?? Maybe in Europe but a flagship store in the states is just ridiculous. Sometimes they just don't use their heads.

After seeing some of the people shopping in that flagship store when I was there? I'd turn EVERYTHING off.

Imagine the consumer with a quarter of a brain who happens to know what UMTS. He goes into the Nokia store in Chicago, likes the N73, finds out he can use it on Cingular, and buys it. What would that semi-intelligent user do if he saw the option for UMTS in the settings of his N73? That user would turn it on UMTS only and get pissed when he doesn't have reception. So, he'd call Nokia Chicago and complain that his phone doesn't work. Nokia would then be responsible for explaining the differences to UMTS technology to him and the rest of the public who might fall into the same category, which would be a larger group of people than the ones found here who complain about not being able to turn UMTS off.

I think it makes perfect sense. Sacrifice a little battery life on a device with an awesome battery to save hundreds of PR problems.

lmao...you really hate people don't you... .....Rather than sacrificing the battery life we should assume those brainless wonders would use their user manuals and a quick page on the cover could clear up that nonsense. Or any loose packaging in the package could explain that.......but I see what your saying though! Of course, anyone that knows what UMTS is would probably figure out that the N73 doesn't operate on the US bands. WHo knows though.....

I don't hate people, necessarily. I think it's more appropriate to say, I'm familiar with the limitations of people, .

Even in your example, it would keep the responsibility to inform the public in Nokia's hands. I think they're tactic is to sell as many handsets as they possibly can without confusing the public, since the general public is the market segment that will buy the most phones. Such as the IM app being removed on the N95 since, up until Wireless Village, it was useless. I could only imagine how many phone calls they would get about the IM app not working on their phones.

Even so, I'm not calling the general public stupid when it comes to these things, but where else are they going to learn about it if they're not enthusiasts like a lot of the members here? Cingular won't explain it to them since the N73 isn't a supported handset. HowardForums won't help since a) they won't search and b) will get ignored or flamed for starting a thread without searching. So Nokia tries to pick up the ball a bit and leave unsupported features in the dark to avoid questions. When the N75 or other US 3G capable device is launched, I'm sure Nokia will be open to answering those questions, but right now, it's not good business to answer questions about what their devices can't do yet rather than answer questions about what they can. Does that make sense? Didn't mean to rant or anything.

well now I am considering not getting one if there is a dumb feature like that. I dont want the phone dying every 2 hrs when its just sitting there.

What i don't understand is that if Nokia was hell bent on leather for disabling something.. Why not set it vm GSM only and THEN remove the menu setting? Fine you don't trust stupid people, I get that.. But why leave it dual mode then?
