Nokia Mystery Event. 18.08.2010

Yeah...that so called "marketing" event by Nokia just makes them look silly. Now had they done something like that for the N9, or even the N8, it may have garnered some attention, but the C6?......C'mon Nokia.

woah, pause....

this was all really for the C6...??
I thought ya'll were just exaggerating again....
the N8 and N9 can't get released soon enough...

Nope...

Sadly I'm one of the ones that wants to see Nokia do well.

With that said you have to wonder WTF they were doing with this event, and why they would go through this much trouble to promote a C6?

The C6 is a poor mans N97, then again isn't Nokia currently trying to distance themselves away from the N97?... :befuddled

OMG. I just saw the video from above and I need to say how embarrassing that mystery event was. Nokia, please, please release the N8 or at least update my POS N97's firmware so it does not randomly freeze all the time. Either of those two events would have been much more important then the unboxing of the c6.

So by the logic of you all here, only high end devices deserve to be marketed? There's a reason why Nokia is #1 in the world and why they're still #1 in the world even though everyone seems to have left them for dead. It's events like this. No device is too big or too small to be advertised.

Then the suggestion to hold the event in the right place for the right device (where you think people might buy it!) still holds

Still, if you have 'events' for every mid-rage or featurephone you plan on outing, you dilute the carrying capacity of the event. Imagine a 'Nokia event' every two weeks -- no one would pay any attention. One or two events a year when you unveil flagships, now that would work.

And that's why they don't have events like this every two weeks. Just the fact that y'all created a thread about the event shows that this type of marketing works regardless of what you think of the device, it got everyone talking. C6 isn't a top of the line device but that doesn't make it useless. For a lot of people, it's exactly what they're looking for. It's only right that Nokia show them that it's out and tell em something about it.

Perhaps you had not noticed that we are talking about it negatively -- once we found out what it was about. I don't think that was the plan. If it was, I'd venture to say it was misguided. One event in fall 2010 for the N8 and perhaps another for the N9 would be plenty. One event for both would be excellent. Sprinking events for the C6 and the E3 or whatnot is not a good idea. IMHO. I hope Nokia's not thinking, 'all publicity is good publicity'... are they?

Even if they are trying to market mid-range phones, watch the London video again there is nobody there. The people that were there didn't even seem interested. I've seen lemonade stands that have drawn more interest.

They have the N8 that's due to come out soon, but the average Joe doesn't know about it. At the same time they are still thinking about closing their remaining flagship stores.

Don't get me wrong I love their phones (which is why I'd like to see them bounce back), but their marketing and update support blows...

Of course that's possible. However, given the messaging slogan on the box which was also used for two qwerty phones before, seems unlikely to be C7 IMO. Just a guess.

But that still doesn't explain why they coordinated London and New York (!!) into this.

The C6 is a phone, though available in Europe, is largely meant for emerging markets. That's where it'll sell most.

And why NY? Sure you can buy it unlocked in the U.S., but how many units will that sell here? Five, maybe?

They also had events in India and Singapore. The location of the events were based on the bloggers they invited, not target geographic region. The target market is anywhere with internet access. That's what WOMWorld does.

It's just a slogan, just because a device doesn't have a QWERTY keyboard doesn't mean it doesn't have a messaging-centric focus

Right but as Jimmy said "emerging markets" so India and Singapore would have made sense for the C6.

IMO this is what they should have done. Forget the whole connecting people gimmick, have one promo for India and Singapore for the C6. A week or two later have another event for the N8 for NY and London. As for NY and London actually spread the word around and have more than a couple of people from Nokia there. Also have a bunch of phones on hand so people can try it out...

Sure, I realise that. C6-01 of course does, so its announcement would fit that bill better than C7. Perhaps/hopefully both will be announced. Sounds to me you know something you are not telling? ;-)
