Nokia E70 battery life sucks... why?

thanks for the quick responses. I've noticed that both of you seem to have the e70-2 model. mine is the original e-70. was there any difference between them, other than the black keyboard?

maybe they have better power management or handle straight GSM/EDGE more efficiently.

i guess i'll try one more battery before turning around and selling it. i really do like the phone, and the web browser is great...even at 130k speeds.

I have the original E70 on Tmobile in San Diego (who needs 850?!? )

Something sounds totally out of whack. A typical day for me probably includes 45 mins to 1 hour of calls, checking email every 30 mins via GPRS/EDGE (only during the day), and maybe 30 mins of web browsing via GPRS/EDGE or Wifi. Given that usage I have to recharge every other day.

Every now and then (like today), I have to recharge early, but generally I go 48 hours between recharges.

Are you sure you are using OEM batteries and not counterfeits?

Also, how is your signal coverage? I wouldn't think that that would make much difference in standby mode, but if you are doing significant calling in a weak signal area and your phone has to max out the transmit power...well...I bet that would be a big power draw.

i checked both batteries on the nokia site, and they were confirmed as authentic. The first one came with the used phone, so I can understand if it isn't capable of holding a full charge, but I got the second one off a very reputable seller on eBay, and it was supposedly new.

My signal strength is usually at or close to max here in the DC area. The weird thing is that there seems to be a pattern of it going ~4 hours or so without losing more than a bar or two of power. Then in the next 2 hours it seems to drop a bar every thirty minutes or so.

I tried switching my mail from IMAP to POP, thinking that it was leaving the connection to my mail server open for too long, but that didn't seem to affect it. Even dropped the Wi-fi strength to lowest setting in advanced configuration.

Hmmm - I can usually go a full day without losing any bars, and then on the 2nd day the bars start to fall pretty quickly and I'm down to 1 or 2 by nightfall. It sounds like you are seeing the same think, but accelerated by a factor of 3 or 4.

Maybe its a hardware fault in the phone?

You understand all of the connection icons? And are sure you don't have a data connection that is getting left on?

It's starting to look like it is a phone problem. Similar experience at the expansys forum: link .

The GPRS icon only shows a connection while downloading email, otherwise it appears to shut off. Today I got 8 hours, which is a slight improvement, but still nowhere near acceptable. Bummer.

thanks to everyone for the help.

Here's another thought. My e70 is obviously a European model, since it came with the 220v charger. It also included the 110v adapter for the charger, which I'm been using. Could that cause any problems with the battery in terms of receiving a full charge?

Not IMO. I have had many European gsm phones with that style charger/adapter and never noticed any decreased charging issues. IMO again, I think it`s the European E70 itself. I think they have various defects. We have all read many posts on this. Rf is bad in USA etc. My 850mhz USA version E70 is one of the best if not the best nokia phone I have ever owned. If you like this form of phone, try and get the U.S. version. It is an awsome phone. Since I`ve done the over the website upgrade to latest F/W I have had absolutely no issues with it. I`m lovin it ! !

Sorry, this just doesn't make any sense to me. I haven't read of any more complaints about the E70 than the E70-2 and I definitely would have caught those. The E70 RF is fine in the US (ignoring the 850 factor. You either need it or you don't) and he has already stated that signal strength isn't the issue.

Not to say that there isn't something wrong with your phone, I just disagree with the generalization about the E70. (If anything I would expect it to be more solid than the E70-2 since the world E70 has such a larger user base)

But I do doubt that the power plug is an issue, I've got the same setup. Plus all modern electronics are designed to take both 110 and 220. I'm pretty sure there is no difference in the power circuitry between the E70 and the E70-2.

We must be reading different forums. It seems the majority of complaints with the device were regarding RF issues. A huge surprise too since nokia is famous for fantastic RF. Your right tho that is not this gentleman`s issue.
I thought I read that he had tried another battery with the same results. That being the case, then there is something def wrong with that device.
What about a total hard reset back to factory settings and try nothing but leaving the phone on standby and see how the battery does? (nothing on,no profiles set, alarms, ringtones, not anything) If it`s still bad, and this device is not returnable, then use it for target practice, get over it and get the U.S. version. I`ll shut up now........

I've seen a few posts complaining about RF reception and I've seen a few posts claiming its got the best RF ever. About what I see for most phones. My own experience is that its RF isn't the greatest, a bit worse than my old Moto V300, but perfectly acceptable. I've had very few dropped call problems with my E70 wheres you could leave my old V300 under a cell tower (not moving) and it would drop a call every 20 minutes like clockwork.

I bought a new E70 direct from Nokia in November 2006. In that time, my battery life has NEVER exceeded twelve hours. Nokia C/S has replaced the battery, I've sent the whole phone in TWICE and now Nokia (thank you!) has even sent me an entirely new replacement phone. I still cannot squeeze out more than twelve hours on the NEW E70!

The Nokia E70 spec sheet still claims "14 days of standby time." Yet, even if we turn off all the "bells and whistles" we're lucky to get "14 HOURS" of standby time. It's the "bells and whistles" that make this phone so great. So, why buy it, if you have to turn them off.

I'm on firmware 2.0618.07.10 (the newest available).

Any one have some ideas?

Thanks,

Wow! somethings going on here. Have you tried backing up all your stuff. clear out your phone, reset it back to factory settings, then test it for battery longevity. With nothing on the device but factory default stuff it should tell you something. 2nd new phone same issue tells me its not the phone. I have no such issues with mine. I had bbc working for awhile but dumped it when I saw what a battery hog it was. Some setting or app is doing it. Keep looking. The E70 is an awesome phone.

Thanks, perhaps I should have tested it out when the replacement phone arrived and before I "restored" my previous settings/applications. I'll give it another try.

Question: Do you ever notice the back of your phone, in the battery area, seeming slightly warmer than the rest of the unit? I'm wondering why the battery is running warm--that's "energy" being expended, isn't it?

Thanks again...

Michael

I did, and all I see is "Standby"

I wish I could say the same. It is a beautiful phone and when it's got "juice" I can only praise it.

BTW, What sort of "battery life" do you experience?

Thanks very much...

I have to agree with Cowboy, My battery life is fantastic. I talk on it minimally but I'm on the intrnet alot. I always charge all my devices overnite to start out fresh in the morning. Try manually setting your network , ight help to not be hunting all the time.

Even if you press and hold the menu key and see only standby, it is possible that some programs like autolock, etc. may yet be running. Autolock is a bit of a battery hog also. As cbreze said, it is better to uninstall all your programs, reset your phone and just run in default mode without a memory card for a few days to try and isolate the cause of your poor battery life.
