Nokia E62 Data plan?

Hi everyone,

I just bought the E62 and was wondering what data plan was capable with it. I read that the MEdia Net Unlimited for 19.99 would do the job.

I am interested in the MEdia Net Unlimited, so would this work? What is the technical name for this feature beause I have to call Cingular to add it. Do I just say I want the "Media Net Unlimited" feature?

ALSO, is there a IM client for Symbian that used data for sending IM's?
It would be nice if I could get the unlimited Media Net and then be able to utilize the unlimited data not only for browsing the internet but for sending IM's.

And by the way, I did use search and got a bunch of nonsense about E62 data cables. And I dont feel like going through the Nokia E62 thread, since it is way to long. So please dont yell at me for not searching.

Thanks!

Ok, so I figured out that I can get the "Media Max 200" package for 19.99. It states I get unlimited Media net data usage. Does using the WAP browser on the E62 to go to sites like ebay and such count as Media Net data usage?

Also the question about the Symbian IM client still remains. Is there a program that would allow me to utilize the unlimited data to send IM's, so I dont use Text messages?

Thanks!

Yeah, if you didn't find it yet, there's a thread about data plans on the TyTn, the exact same applies to the E62 (and all PDAs/Phones for that matter.)

Yeah. Everything you do on that phone goes through the unlimited Media net data package.

I don't know about Symbian's IM client. I would assume it's a standard "messaging" aka Text messaging + Multimedia/picture messaging app, which would in fact use the 200 messages portion of your Media max plan. Maybe someone else with Symbian should confirm this.

For PalmOS and WM5 people. I point them to Verichat. But it doesn't have a Symbian version. I did a quick Google search and turned up at least one program:
SHAPE IM.

I have no experience with it. I am in fact curious, I might download it for PocketPC and check it out.
In any case look around more and see if possibly there's another forum or web site out on the net that might have reviews of IM clients (ie. you MIGHT find more info elsewhere.)
But this SHAP program will do the trick as it claims "No cost per message, only standard payment for wireless data transfer." That's what you have to look for in an IM program. I think you'll find most, if not all of them use "DATA" as opposed to "text messaging" or "SMS" which comes out of your 200 messaging bucket.
Any app that has to stay logged on to GPRS/EDGE to work is using data. If it doesn't need to and limits messages to 160 characters, then it's definatley SMS/text messaging.

Sorry I'm not more help on that. But You'll be just fine on Media Max.

EDIT:
PS. I just noticed that this won the Smartphone & PocketPC Magazine award for 2006, best IM messenger. Now I remember seeing this a couple of days ago when I was reading this issue. I forgot the name of it but was intending to check it out. In that case SHAPE should be a good program.

Thanks for your help.

I think come Monday when my E62 gets here I will download the 5 day trial version of SHAPE. Sounds like a decent program. I have head Verichat is good, but do bad they dont have a client for Symbian.

If you do try SHAPE over the weekend let me know how it is.

Once again, thanks for your help!

Actually it's considered a blackberry device and can be sold with the black berry plans including the $30 bb personal plan.

yea I know I could have either of those. But there are so many people that use the MEdia Net plan for their PDA devices, so thats what I am going to do. I dont want to pay an extra 10.00 a month for BB personal, when I am not going to even use the Blackberry functions of this device.

All I am going to do is browse the web occasionally, send IM's (using data, not texts, of course).

Thanks for taking time to respond guys, but I dont want, nor need either of those plans.

O and I found out Agile messenger does make a Symbian version and its a Beta. I think I will try both the trials and see which one I like best, because right now I have no idea.

When I got my E62 I had the $40 unlimited data plan and it worked great. They told me that I had to get the BB data plan so I switched and it worked the same way. After being here, they told me to switch to the MediaMax200/1000 and I did - and it works the same exact way. No difference in speeds or quality.

I personally love the IM client that this phone comes with, but yes - it uses text/sms. I dont use it all that much and have 1000 per month, so it doesnt phase me.

Why not use Agile, it has a version for symbian based phones and use data, not text msg.

The reason the builtin client on the E62 uses SMS is so Cingular can make more money! In fact, it may not use SMS at all - but just notify Cingular of your messages so you can be billed as SMS.

Old phones did not have IM clients, so there was (and is) a way to truly IM via SMS and special shortcodes for the IM provider. That is not really needed with today's smarter phones, but Cingular doesn't want to let go of a revenue stream.

That is incorrect. Any non blackberry device that uses blackberry e-mail client, requires a blackberry connect plan for non blackberry devices. The cheapest is $44.99 a month. The 29.99 blackberry plan is only for blackberry exclusive (RIM) devices.

Officially, the $40 data connect plan is the only thing the web site or store sales people will sell you. But the $20 Media Max or $20 Smarphone Connect plans will work just as well. Media Max is same as smartphone but includes text messaging. Adding the $20 plans requires calling CS and lying about the phone you have to ask for the Media Max plan.

You can also walk into a Cingular store and ask them to downgrade your plan. I borrowed my girlfriends RAZR and brought it to the store but they didnt even ask me afor proof that I was switching phones.
