Nokia E61 Questions/Concerned about IMAP mail

The various reviews I read concerning the E61 seemed to indicate some buggy functionality when it came to IMAP email in the E61. However, all the reviews were done mid-year '06, and I'm sure some firmware updates have come out in the meantime.

I'm looking for a blackberry-functionality type phone, but as all my email servers are unix based, blackberry push is out. So, I'm considering the Nokia E61. I *only* support IMAP email service, however, so it's important to me the IMAP functionality is good. In the reviews, it said the phone didn't properly set the email flags (replied to/whatever) on IMAP mail, is this still true? Also - when set to auto-check email, is it true that it keeps the wifi/edge/gprs connections active permanently without every disconnecting (thus killing battery?) When auto-check for email is on, using IMAP, will I still be able to receive/make calls without "missing" any of them due to the edge/wifi/gprs connection being active?

How's the mac-syncing work? Do you need a third party application, or will it directly sync? I'm concerned with the contact list, calendar, todo list, etc. With contacts, it's important that it syncs correctly, not just putting random phone numbers in random categories (problem I've had with other phones...)

How is the phone overall, in your opinions, with the latest firmware update? Is it hard to get updates now? I do live in the US - and use T-Mobile - so I'm not sure if the nokia updater would work for me/keep my phone current. Please do let me know about this.

All the reviews said reception was excellent, so I'm not too worried about that. Any other words/comments/etc you might have would be greatly appreciated. I was considering the N73 due to the nice camera, but after looking at it - it seems low light photos still stink (which is 99% of the time I use a camera phone - party photos and such.) Looks like it's still not usable for photos like that (flash isn't strong enough) so really no point to a camera. So, I'm considering the E61 since the QWERTY keyboard will really help (I'm a heavy email user.) Please do give any input concerning this, especially if you know of upcoming models that might be best of both worlds or anything like that.

Thank you all kindly,
David

i used the imap function for my .mac mail when i had it and it worked just fine. it supports imap idle so it keeps the connection alive and will show new messages. i didn't have any problems with not showing read/not read or anything. i have switched everything that i use over to gmail now and i use blackberry with that. another option for you could be using the blackberry internet service with your imap server. the bb server checks mail and forwards it to the handheld, no software on your server needed.

How would that be any better than just using the built in IMAP client, though? Seems like just an extra in-between step and an additional monthly fee. Thanks for the input!

Since you use .mac, I'm assuming you have a mac - how does synching work? Do you need some third party plugin?

Also - where the best place to buy this phone from that's reliable? Looking for a phone that NSU will see and allow upgrade to v3 - I noticed certain phones with NSU don't show the v3 update. I'd prefer a European phone, as I travel there most, and the additional European languages would be helpful.

well i have a mac and a pc but i haven't tried to sync to the mac. it is supposed to work, but i haven't tried. i was just suggesting blackberry because if you were concerned about the connection staying on all the time. that is true it does require a special plan and you could save some money by using the default client. there are other mail apps for s60, the one that comes to mind is profimail. i haven't played with that very much but there are alternatives out there.

i bought my e61 from myworldphone.com, i would suggest not doing that. they sent me my first one which had an arabic keypad and was just weird. it took about a month total from time of order to me getting one with an english keypad on it. you can change your product code and change keypads if you need, you will void the warranty by doing it though. check out the "new e61 firmware" thread.

as for syncing to the mac, i have seen an isync plugin for syncing to isync, but again i haven't tried it myself. also the battery on this thing is awesome so it isn't a big deal to run the imap all the time. i used mail for exchange on mine in the past and that really chews up the power when "always on" just because it can't idle. the only problems i have had with the built in client is that when you have auto retrieve on and you go out of coverage mine would error out and turn off the auto retrieve. by using blackberry it gets around that as it uses the rim servers. plus gmail and blackberry play very nice together and will push all my email within seconds to the phone.

sorry i can't be of too much help, you might even want to try getting one and playing with it to see if it works for you and if not return it, just make sure whoever you get it from would take it back. i think compusa has the e61 on their website but it is online only and a lot more money than other retailers. you could also look at the e62, the cingularized version without wifi unless you need wifi.
