Nokia applications

I need a phone manager that will let me only show certain contacts a la Blackberry. There are categories in the phone, but no way to show which list(s) should be available. Spammers are starting up again, and the calls usually get named with obscenities and I'd prefer to keep that list hidden!
Also could use another web browser. I see Nokia was supposed to update, but can't find it. Opera mini works, but quits every now and then and there is no place to tell it where to connect (wifi or carrier) Nokia's browser asks.
I've looked through the lists and searched, but most apps only tend to what people seem to want - upload to Twitter, Facebook, play Youtube and will give no other info.
Who uses what and why?
Thanks

I'm getting sick of opera mobile just seemingly taking forever to load a page every so often. Like it would just hang and never finish loading (status bar stuck). Happens on both wifi and data. Similar experiences on Opera Mini

why don't you use a blacklist program to just block spammers? then you won't have to add them to your contacts list. it will just filter out the number.

opera mini works fine for me. go to advanced settings and you can change the "use system default" settings for internet to always ask if you want.

I've found a couple of free ones (blacklists), but no reviews. I have no objection to paying for one, but I want to play with it first. I started using silent rings as there were no blockers for TM phones like Rizr.

I don't have an advanced setting for that in Mini. All I have is protocol, and network test. Every other program that uses wifi asks or has a setting, but not mini.

handy blacklist is pretty simple to use. there's blackballer that's free, then there's a pro version which is way better. all the other ones are pretty much the same in terms of features, just looks different.

I did. It's wasn't there. I got it from the Ovi store, and Nokia could have messed with it. Or it was some kind of beta.
I dl Opera instead, from Opera's site and if you use turbo it isn't that much slower. And it asks how you want to connect.

I checked out a couple of demos on blacklisting and right now they are overkill. I just want the PITA list not shown. I dumped the list as I hadn't been bothered for about 6 months.

I don't think Nokia has messed with it. However it is always best to go to the source. Go to m.opera.com using the default browser, find version 5.1

I have tried sending apps to the phone. They don't/won't install. Maybe the apps don't like wifi as the medium. I prefer to dl and sync anyway. I could have tossed something that OTA apps need when I got the phone. Got rid of all the social apps first thing. Everything else works just fine.

There is a simple to use Nokia-supported application called Advanced Call Manager.

It was provided free back in the days of the E71-2. There is a free version available in Ovi Store that you can try. If it provides enough functionality for you, it's free forever. There is another version with a small price that provides additional functionality.

Although my main device is an iPhone (firewalled, of course), I recently purchased a Nokia E5-00.2 as a backup device, and one of the first things I did was to go and find the free version of Advanced Call Manager. I think that most people, even heavy business users, will be able to do what they want.

I deleted membership in Ovi. I don't want to deal with them. In fact, I think that was who the spam calls were from. I got them as soon as I deleted.

Ovi does censor stuff. Maybe that was available for your phone, but not the C-series. I was told that Skype was not available for C6 and since Ovi wants your IMEI and serial you can't get around it. Could not d/l to phone from Skype, but did install it via downloaded file and sync via PC Suite and it works. Whatever a phone does, should be between the phone and my carrier.

Besides basic operation you should be able to chose what you want, and not be locked into the phone makers junk. It's just like all the crap they preload onto computers, except you can get rid of most of that.
For instance - I have Docs to Go for a certain OS. I buy another phone with the same OS from another maker, why can't I delete what Office Suite they have? I'll be using my copy of Docs since I've already paid for it.

My phone isn't considered a business phone even though I'm turning it into a PDA. I think it's considered a "social" phone and we don't need "business" apps.

Thats not Ovi ( Nokia ) censoring, its the 'fault' of the developer - they need to specify what phones the application supports. If they don't list C6 as "compatible" then its not going to be available for that phone.

Overall, Ovi Store is a half job done.. pretty much sums up Nokia.

Go read post #38 in the VOIP for symbian thread. He said it and I agree.
Skype itself on Skype's website said it was available and available on Ovi. Isn't Skype the developing company? Or at least own the rights?
