Noka N95-4 random restarts, blame certain cell towers

I am not able to use my phone after arriving at hotel in Los Angeles. I am constantly getting reboots on my phone. If I disable UTMS it seems fine.

I have experienced similar behavior back in NY. While commuting my phone would reboot everyday at the same exact location, hence why I'm blaming certain towers.

Can I ask ATT for help. Do you think it can be because I'm only on a $10/mo DATA unlimitted for non-smart phones? It works great all around my home area, Ulster, Dutchess, Orange counties. The only issue I have seen is in Rockland at the one spot my phone reboots in Pearl River.

What can I do to get my 3G working in CA for the next week?

No, this is an issue with the old firmware build that is currently running on your device. When AT&T started implementing the 850MHz 3G overlay in some markets it caused problems for a number of Nokia devices; N95, E71, etc. The short term fix is to set the device to GSM only. The latest version of firmware will fix the restart issues so when you get a chance update your device to version 35.2.2. (Assuming you have the US version with product code 0561948)

Read the thread on "E63 constantly turning off and on", this is your situation.
Reflash, upgrade, or use GSM/2G only.
AT&T will not change their system which causes this problem on older Nokia firmware.

How Gordonesh and I posted a reply at the exact same time, I dunno...

Thank you both for the response. I don't know why I thought I was on the latest firmware. Perhaps the last time I checked there were no updates available. I jumped from v20.xx.xxx to v35.2.002... All appears well overnight there have been no restarts.

Now I wish I can remember what I was trying to do in the past when I last checked firmware. I think it had to do with SAMBA or WebDav access.

I think my search terms did not yield the thread on the E63.

Thanks a million!

I just wanted to update with a couple issues I found.

I am shocked that the new firmware is not compatible with the OVI store. What's up with that NOKIA? Says my device is not compatible.

Also there were some issues with my restore from backup. A few apps did not reload such as putty, OperaMobile 10, and all link based apps (shortcuts).

Ok, some apps not working after the upgrade is pretty normal.
However, OVI store is something else.
If my guess is right, you upgraded an old firmware to the newest with the OTA upgrade on the phone.
The OTA firmware upgrade is as small as it can be and still work for most phones.
The incompatible OVI store is probably due to the app being upgraded in a previous incremental OTA upgrade, that you missed.
In this case, I would try re-installing the current firmware on a PC via NSU before giving up.
The OVI store on your phone might be fixed by downloading a more recent .sisx version somewhere and trying to install over the old one.
The NSU upgrades are much bigger downloads than the OTA upgrades.
Good luck

I did perform the update with Nokia PC Suite (USB connected). Is this considered Over The Air? Shall I try to install over the firmware with NSU client?

Did Nokia Disable Maps Suite. I never paid for Voice Guidance, since the Device rarely worked in a Car.

I was pleased to see a new interface with Maps after upgrade, but now it seems I can't even create a point to point trip without paying a fee. Is this normal, or may a second try at FW upgrade help?

I was hoping that you just had a bad flash OTA, meaning updated from the phone.
In that case updating from the PC sometimes helps. I would try the update from the pc using NSU again. Make sure that NSU is updated too.
If that doesn't help, there is another kind of flash to try, but that is more complicated.

Nokia's new versions of Maps will not do free Nav on older devices.

mrrphone, thank you for keeping up with this thread.

I don't understand, is maps part of the firmware? I thought "Firmware" was the same as just the Operating System, not bundled apps.

I must say that Nokia has really dumped on their customers if I can't get back the old Maps app.

I thought when I restored my backup, my apps would remain. I guess another uneducated customer bites the dust.

I refuse to pay for the less than stellar Maps App from Nokia. If I were to pay, I'd be looking into Third Party solutions... even then the GPS sensor is not strong enough to justify the cost of software.... oh well.

Do you have any links for the more complicated method for flashing the device?
Can I go back to an earlier firmware?

Thanks again.

Restoring programs from an old backup and introduce problems after a firmware upgrade. I generally keep installation files on an SD card, or on the built-in memory in the case of the N95-4, so that I can easily reinstall all my old apps.

The only way to upgrade the N95-4 is using NSU from a PC as there was no support for OTA (Over the Air) updates since it was a FP1 device.

I'm very surprised that the Ovi Store doesn't work on the device? Is there a link to the Ovi Store on the device? It should prompt you to install a newer version?

What version of Nokia Maps is currently part of your new firmware? There's an app, Nokia Maps Updater, that will update Nokia Maps to v3.03 and actually provides some decent navigation, lack of GPS sensitivity not withstanding. The last time I had the N95-4 a years worth of licensing for navigation was ~$12 or so. Keep in mind that the slider needs to be open for optimal GPS performance. And Google Maps is a staple install, one of the first apps installed on any device.

No way to go back to earlier firmware versions.

My Nokia N75 is constantly rebooting and acting up. Shutting off, turning on, sitting Idle with no cell signal. I'd like to update the firmware, but the wizards at Nokia and ATT did that funny version thing so my firmware never can be updated. Is this worth repairing or throw away? Thanks.
