noises in horror movies

A sudden noise does not make the movie scary - it only makes people jump.

I am half watching romeros land of the dead - i have it on in the background at the moment, it is dire, but every so often, without watching the picture, I jump because of a loud noise in it.

I would much rather watch a well thought out frightening film which does not rely on sudden loud noises, one which you recall in the dark hours............

I can't believe some of these movie rely on the old cliches (cat, hand on the shoulder, sudder noise) because it's even been 12 years since Scream for god's sake.

You'd of thought the filmakers would of realised it doesnt work after the dozen or so late 90's slashers.

Not a sound, but how awful is the cliche where, when people reach or peer round corners, the monster/baddie is always on the other side, inches from them?

Last weeks Primeval did that one twice within the first half.
