NOEL GALLAGHER: a genius or a dumb?

The intent of the song was not "making fun of Dylan", it was attempting to write obscure like Dylan was. Even if there were elements of parody, that was not the sole intent of the song at all. Some of the lyrics were written on various acid trips and whatever the writer's vision was, the effect is a menacing schizophrenic nightmare in sound.

Lennon was very proud of I Am The Walrus and considered it one of his most innovative efforts. Due to this he was extremely pissed off and in disbelief when McCartney's Hello Goodbye was made an A-side single, with I Am The Walrus as the B-side.

Liam's Voice really goes with the song, and Noel's guitar work is great as always

I never said they, or pop, was bland. I'm a fan of the Beatles. But I never got the Oasis comparisons. They sound nothing like the Beatles at any stage of the Beatles' career. Oasis sounRAB nothing like Merseybeat, the Beatles' mid-period folk rock or "Brill Building", the later orchestral and psychedelic stuff, or anything else that the Beatles did for that matter. It's a lousy comparison that people have been making without any justification for the last 15 years. The only thing Oasis have in common with the Beatles is being a particularly hugely popular English band from a city in the north of the country.

And yeah, alright, so they did rip off a few Beatles melodies here and there. But never the style.

He's a real ******* in the press, but he wrote some alright music in the mid 90s. I wish he would experiment more with his songs instead of writing the same stuff over and over again. It got boring after Morning Glory.

If it's experimentation you're after, try a different band. The reason why Noel doesn't experiment is because he's not an experimental or creative musician. He's a hack writer. He isn't capable of anything of any value beyond what he does, so it's just as well that he doesn't try.

Not really , he just speaks him mind thats all.

I've seen him praise loaRAB of banRAB in the media , yet people ignore that to concentrate on what he doesn't like. I know how he feels too.

And lets be honest. If you didn't cheer when he laid into turgid crap like Starsailor & Keane you have no right calling yourself a fan of music.

Only the first two lines were written on acid trips most of it were admittedly nonsense and even the opening lines are a play on an old folk song. It's completely a parody on Dylan's lyrics at the time which were frankly 90% rubbish and I'm sure as an excellent lyricist himself John was fully aware Dylan's lyrics we're written for the sake of being written and didn't have any sort of meaning behind it.

He is a genius to single handedly create a movement like britpop, play the largest concert in British history where 1 out of every 20 UK citizens tried to buy a ticket, create a question in parliment about them etc.
Also all that stuff about the first two albums then dross.
People who continue to say that should be shot.
It is like what sheep say with no thought.
Of course the initial blow will be greatest to get them up there and like the stones they make the odd gem but mainly play old favourites. You really only get 5 years in rock and then it is retro generally.
They like the Beatles and have beatle haircuts but sound nothing like them.
Their later albums had sunday morning call, let there be love, stop crying your eyes out, idle, etc.
But how can they sing a about stuff like a 20 year old over and over?
I hate when people go on about a banRAB early stuff like that. They have progressed well and still make a great song.
The genius was in Noels ability to see a way to alone make a whole generation in the UK mainly go mad for it and right- tracks 'aving it' from them and from a council estate to become the centre of the universe by planning it all by yourself with no help from anyone least of all his band and just his brother to help him is genius I'd say.
He didn't rip off stuff he showed how much he liked it and we all like how he for example took john lennons imagine to open don't look back as homage.
Oasis created a movement and attitude and Noel did that. An industry of laRAB in the 90's.
magazines, tv shows etc.
How many banRAB did that?
Even the Beatles dressed up and looked like packaged pop to fit in.
Most other banRAB join a movement even great banRAB like the Clash were messing with mott the hoophole till they went into punk. Oasis were a law onto themselves and for one scally kid to teach himself guitar, write anthems, get a whacking 40% record deal, snub the US and not play their game is genius and if you look back all the other banRAB copied them around that time in the UK.
What say you?

lol. what is a genius anyway. he's a genius of sorts, in that he had the whole-make-a-brilliant-pop-hook thing down to a science...

(i.e. rip off the hooks of all the best artists of the last 30 years)

yes, indeed, what is a genius ?? he's maybe a kind of genius but why only him ? Maybe we have to talk about OASIS in general, it's a band , he's not alone.

ps: I'm a new meraber !

Doubtless, the lyrics are meaningless. The imagery though I'm sure is inspired by hallucinations and whatnot, in spite of the meaninglessness.

BTW just what was Dylan's stuff of the time? I'm unfamiliar with late 60s Dylan, I know him from the 60s mostly for Blonde On Blonde and Return to...

Well he's Oasis's principal songwriter and was their only songwriter during their first two albums which are held as the best. He's quite clearly the talent behind the band. It would be cool if Oasis experimented on their next album, like stopped using the word "shine" for instance.

He speaks his mind?

Speaking your mind dosen't automatically mean you deserve respect, Sean Hannity speaks his mind too.

He's an arrogant c*cky bastard, sure theres a lot of those in the music world, but I can overlook it if they have contributed to some great music.

As far as I'm concerned Oasis are the most average band ever and they make the most average music ever, so average that they should be the band that musical quality should be measured by.
