no silent mode?

Since the android system update decided to update everything on my android, there is no more option for the master volume to go to silent mode (without having to change all my notification settings), instead of just vibrate. Is there a new way to be setting it to silent? I used to just hit the volume button for it, but that no longer works

Any suggestions or help? I need for it to be on silent, but I don't want to have to turn it off...

Thanks in advanced

yeah, i've been wondering this too. i remember there being both a silent and vibrate option on cm6 for my g1, but i'm using some froyo ports for my hd2, and there's apparently only a silent option. it's weird.

Volume? Silent Mode? Vibrate? I don't think I've used the volume buttons on an Android phone for over a year.

You guys should consider using Tasker. You can react to anything the phone can sense or know about (e.g. location, running a specific app, time, coming in range of given WiFi SSID or MAC, plugging in USB, plugging in AC power, orientation, etc etc... you get the idea, hundreds of options), and then change absolutely any setting or settings on the phone, send specific SMS messages, do HTTP POSTS... I mean this is one hell of a powerful and really cool app.

Some examples what I do with it:

If I lose my phone I can text it a special code and it'll text me back its location with a nice shortened google maps link, and full details of any WiFis in range.

If it's after 11pm, and I plug in an AC adaptor to charge it, and it's face down, it goes into silent mode (because I want to sleep). It'll automatically come out of this when I unplug the charger.

It can do everything that Locale does (e.g. settings silent mode etc when you approach the cinema), but it doesn't send personal information to third-party servers without your knowledge. It works with Locale plugins too.

Whenever I use any app that really does need GPS for precise locations (e.g. Google Navigation) I have it turn the GPS on, and back off when those apps exit. I don't like random apps knowing my location.

When I leave range of my home WiFi, I have it turn the brightness (if it's daytime) and volume up, as I'm likely to be outside.

Anyway - it's some cool stuff is that app. It's utterly awesome, and nothing remotely like it can or will ever exist for the iPhone due to it's pseudo-multi-tasking.

Check out the "usage examples" section of their homepage: http://tasker.dinglisch.net/

my routine is changing far too often to have to be adjusting settings to automatically change. if you have cm6, the only thing i can think of is if you use the power control widget, theres an option to add a volume adjuster on it that'll toggle between silent, vibrate, and on (both sound and vibrate). it's really stupid that they changed this though :/ i can't think of any possible logic behind it.

There are more options too.

Coming back to Tasker, you can activate any "task" (that's like a profile of settings) via a shortcut too. So you could make a task that sets all the volumes (and anything else) the way you want them, and another to put it on silent, and then make two shortcuts to put on your home screen to activate them when needed. Don't like shortcuts? Remap the (unneeded) camera button to toggle silent.

Apps like Toggle Settings can activate profiles of settings at a touch of a button.

There are a ton of free widgets that can toggle silent mode: http://www.androlib.com/r.aspx?r=silent+widget&t=free

You can also a simple profile application like Quick Profiles Pro for manual switching. PhoneWeaver offers manual and automatic profile switching.

Just a thought here about Tasker. There are so many things you can trigger profiles on. Surely a combination of being within a given distance of a given location, or coming into range of a given WiFi or BlueTooth device, would be enough for most profiles?

Working shifts? You could have a silent profile to turn on when your phone is on charge (AC, not USB) and face down.

Anyway, on the flipside, Tasker is quite complicated to get into initially. It's almost like a 4G programming language.
