The director of Quantum Of Solace has dropped some of James Bond's most famous catchphrases as part of a move to bring the secret agent into the 21st Century.

In his 22nd screen adventure, the operative will not make his classic introduction "The name is Bond, James Bond". Nor will he order his martinis, shaken not stirred.

Director Marc Forster told The Independent: "There was a 'Bond, James Bond' in the script. There are several places where we shot it as well, but it never worked as we hoped.

"I just felt we should cut it out, and Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson (the film's producers) agreed, and Daniel [Craig], agreed too. It's nice to be open-minded about the Bond formula. You can always go back to them later on."

Editor of the online 007 Magazine, Graham Rye, said that Craig is much closer to creator Ian Fleming's vision of the British agent.

"The Bond films had become tired and needed reinvigorating. Rather than going away from Fleming I think the producers have gone back to him," he said.

The movie will get its first public screening at the BFI London Film Festival at the end of next month.

Are people outraged about this? Or is it generally agreed that it's a good idea? It seems to me that bit by bit, they're removing lots of the identity of James Bond as we know it- I'm just not sure whether I agree with it or not.

They dropped a number of (what where at the time) traditional Bond elements for the early days of Roger Moore, then phased them back in later. I don't think it's that much of a problem. Although I do think they should have kept Bond...James Bond in.

Both the Martini thing ("Shaken or stirred?" "Do I look like I care?") and the "Bond, James Bond" thing were referenced in Casino Royale - I see why crowbarring them into Quantum of Solace would just seem laboured. The new series have managed to break away from the tired, self-parody with Casino Royale - I'm glad to see them keep this up.

I don't know, first the film gets a crap theme tune, now even the old catchphrases are disaapearing. I mean whats he gonna say, hi my name's james bond. Jus wont be the same somehow. Really cant see what the point in removing that is. I just hope the film is so good it can get away with these problems.

What elements are you reffering to? I cant think what this means?

But back on topic, will the traditional gun barrel and pre title sequence return?

Deliberatly....

No casinos
No dinner jacket
Different gun to the Walther
No briefing in M's office
Different take on the pre-title sequence
No Q (although I think they scripted it, but Desmond Llewellyn wasn't available)
No megalomaniac supervillain.

Possibly a few more I can't remember

Yes i see now. You are mainly referring to Live And Let Die. I think the only Bond film where Bond wasnt in the opening sequence in any shape or form. ( In the man with the golden gun although Bonddidnt appear you did see a waxwork of him and although Connery was in From Russia With Love it was someone wearing a mask of Bond)

They phased those things slowly back in over the next few films, a few elements came back in for The Man With The Golden Gun, but the rest didn't come back until The Spy Who Loved Me

I believe a lot of things they have dropped hardly turn up in the original books anyway(including Money Penny and Q), I see no problem at all and things like this don't get on my nerves...

If they making them a lot closer to the books then go ahead, fine by me.

hopefully if will return in his third outing, but for now let's not let the fatc another, classic alomost famous saying, is missing, ruin the film. may be it will be in the Deleted Scenes, with all the scenes they tried to use it in!

Not in Quantum of Solace either.

And there is the Felix Leiter situation. What happened to him in The Living Daylights (film) actually happened in Live and Let Die (novel) which was, in fact, Fleming's second James Bond novel.

Connery didn't say "Bond, James Bond" in From Russia With Love. I don't see many people dumping on that movie because of it. What tabloid tommyrot this story is.

I'm sure the Llewellyn family would find this hilarious.

Yeah, I'm in your gang on this one. Well said.

I suppose it feeRAB the forum, and gets the hype built up before the film comes out. One of the best things about Casino Royale was the escape from the self-parody/pantomime that existed in the series. They had to do something anyway. The Bourne films were just too good to ignore.
