No more talks of Symbian^4 as Symbian will be upgradable

The Galaxy S for instance had issues with lag (still does) and GPS.


Other Android devices have gone through birth defects as well. Heck even Apple (the company with no flaws in the eyes of fanbois) had probably the most noticeable launch issue of all time.


ALL early adopters pay a price - with birth defects and with their wallets...
 
That's always a possibility, but who knows.

It's possible that this new emphasis of Qt and reducing the importance of the "Symbian" brand/name are just laying the ground work for backing away from the platform. But again, who knows...

Also, theoretically, they can adopt Android and still push the Qt story, no? Not saying that they will go with Android, so don't jump down my throat Nokia fans. We're just speculating here.
 
Early adopters buy on faith...... and it is they who moan and whine the most when the unit does not do this or that or is not fast enough or accurate enough. Anyone who bought a Samsung Galaxy within the last three months has got no leg to stand on when it comes to complaining. The information was out there. The whiners chose to ignore it. They always do. The difference in this case is the Samsung is using current and well supported OS. One CAn be an early adopter and know eventually the issues will be resolved in the near future. With Symbian one is taking a risk that won;t happen and paying a premium for an unsubsidized device on top of it.

I don't understand the "lag" issue..That to me is a "perfection issue" When scrolling fast the screen will hesitate a tad and they are building ROMS for that and lag fixes that can cause more harm than good if one forgets to disable it before burning a new ROM

GPS is an issue for some again seeking perfection. NO device is perfect and seeking it will cause more issues. I can say for the $150 I paid it is 100X better than my N97 in every way and more. My N97 had "lag" issues. The Captivate doesn't come close to having those issues when compared. A slight pause now and then is nothing to get alarmed about and the GPS will do what it ius supposed to do albeit not as quick or accurate to 10 feet as some might want.

People expect far too much from these devices. I said that last year referring to the N97 and say it again regarding the much better Captivate. I guess I am lucky, I am perpetually satisfied with my purchases because I do the research and read read read before I jump and already know if other peoples 'issues" will become my own. Usually they don't because i KNOW what to expect.
and can decide whether or not to make the purchase AFTER the information is out there.

We were already using the QT framework in Symbian^3, along with AVKON and others but for the UI improvements in Symbian^4 we were moving to Orbit – we are now discontinuing the Orbit development and continuing just with Qt and Qt Quick – that’s how we get the continuity. By using the Qt framework we can introduce the UI, app and service improvements into the existing platform without making a break to a new platform release.

I'd call that embellishment.

Symbian doesn't need as many Symbian OS developers any more because they don't intend to UPDATE the OS, just the apps that run on it (and they run because the Qt runtime libraries have been (fully/largely??) ported across.

The underlying workhorse no longer needs to change when the apps can be skinnable, fullscreen etc (yay, Qt).

Of course, this won't stop the doomsayers or stock prospectors from opinionating (or pontificating) on the matter, but hey - the internet is 'free', isn't it? ;)

You don't need KIES...Flash the JH7 OTA update via Clockwork Recovery....while you are at it flash Cognition's 2.2 9.1.1 and download Launcher Pro. It removes the Samsung and ATT crapware. (you can individually install what crapware you want though via apks). It does leave Samsung's launcher alone but you can switch that out for a much better one from the market.



When the "official" Samsung 2.2 is released (Designgears has an" official beta" he has been building on) the custom ROMs will be far better. many are using them now and enjoying 2.2 on their Galaxys.

No need to wait.....The beauty of Android is there is no waiting and no need for ANY manufacturer SW to do anything. Install CW update.zip on your internal SD card...Boot into recovery and install packages

1. Move the ROM of choice onto the internal sdcard.


Part 2

1. Go to the Market app.
2. Download ROM Manager
3. Open ROM Manager
4. Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
5. Confirm Phone Model (Select )
6. Reboot into Recovery
7. Allow Superuser Permissions
8. Press OK


**Should Reboot into the Android system recovery

Part 3

1. Press your power button on "reboot system now"
2. Repeat steps 3 to 8 in Part 2.
3. You should now see ClockworkMod Recovery

**Use volume keys select items in the list.
**Use the power button to select/open items in the recovery list

Part 4

1. Select "install zip from sdcard"
2. Select "choose zip from sdcard"
3. Select the ROM you want to flash
4. Select Yes - Install "{the ROM's name here}"
5. Sit back and relax for +/- 5 minutes whilst it flashes(Don't mind the random blue text)
6. Select +++++Go Back+++++
7. Select reboot system now
8. Sit back and relax again for another +/- 5 minutes, you will be stuck on the AT&T Logo for a while.

NO NEED TO WAIT FOR SAMSUNG....
 
T Bong & Drillbit have just ensured I'll never try an Android phone. Appearently they turn you into thread hijacking, forum tools.

I'm torn on the Symbian^4 announcement. It should of been that way in the first place but it's a bad sign to make such a major change for the announced road map.
 
That's ok. I receive zero benefit from anyone who buys an Android phone. I am betting you will get one though..Maybe not today...But those who really like to tinker with this technology will get an Android based OS at some point. I don't know many Nokia users who don't like to tinker.....but this time it's not to fix a broken device. It is to make it better.......
 
@T Bong You're not perpetually satisfied with your purchases because you did research, you just accept whatever limitations and then defend them blindly. The Captivate has a GPS issue. You can spin it all you like. My E72 quickly locks with accurate GPS reading in under 10 seconds. I've seen bloggers compare the Captivate GPS to the E72 and N97 mini and the Nokia drastically outperform it. This is an expectation based on the performance of other devices. If you're so happy with your Captivate then take your BS trolling off the S60 forums and enjoy your device. I have a feeling if you had purchased an old RAZR you'd be defending the capabilities of that device over all others as well. STFU already.

- Meego will be a 2011 event
- Symbian 4 cancelled

yeah this makes me very optimistic
Nokia is going android thats what this is all about.
they just need consumers to buy their smartphones in the meantime.
 
In fact, the more of those Register comments I read, the more I think Nokia dumped undesirable, lard-living types who weren't getting anything done.

The Symbian staffers commenting are those who left LONG ago, by their own admission - not the newly laid off, so Jimmy_K's characterization of them (as newly laid off yesterday types) is misleading, as worded!
 
So you are going to tell ME I am not satisfied? are you kidding me? I AM satisfied BECAUSE I do the research and yes ACCEPT the limitations of a device because I know no device will ever be perfect and some people are way to anal about these things. Captivate has a GPS issue. no doubt. Is it an issue for ME? Nope I did what I could to make it better. I don't whine about things when I I decide beforehand to purchase a unit DESPITE the whiners........I simply PASS (like I did with the N8 knowing Symbian is dead) or live with them because most issues are overblown and then piled on..... by people who don;t do the research first. I don't feel sorry for them. Yes the RAZR was a great device in it's day and fpor those who still use them today...

Anyone who buys a "flawed" device in THEIR eyes expecting the manufacturer to quickly make things perfect is incredibly ignorant. I am guessing you fall into that category.


Oh and PLEEEEEZE.........Please send a link top those "Bloggers" who claim the N97 is faster than the Captivate. I need a good laugh after reading your drivel.

Before passing any judgment on Symbian, you should try the N8 for a week or so.. I am very happy with performance and stability. Big improvement, and it will only get better.
