No more talks of Symbian^4 as Symbian will be upgradable

The link thing happened to me the other day too - posted a link to Nokia Forum but when clicked went to NokiaUSA store... weird. Posted the same link in another forum and worked fine.

You're totally right. :)

S^3 will be the last version that gets any major under the hood changes... it seems like it's all going to be UI changes going forward.

In Finland at least there are/were 4000 people in the Symbian R&D, and 600 will get laid off - so about 15%. If it's about the same % globally, it is at least conceivable that such a cut would be mostly cutting fat and making the whole organization more efficient.

Hmmm I'm not feeling the gender differences between the phones.

Anywhoo the Telus Desire is Rumored to get the Froyo update anywhere from today to the end of this week.

The SGS is supposed to get the update mid-November.

After seeing Froyo on both, one will get eliminated since IMO it's not worth having two very high priced phones running the same OS. It will come down to whichever runs Froyo better (especially with battery life) for me.

Eventually my e72 will be pitted against the N8 as well once the N8 gets updated and go from there... :)

A couple of interesting bits from the register:

Android con offers ex-Nokia staff discount (nice move Google)
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/10/22/droidcon/

Nokia locks* out Symbian staffers
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/10/22/nokia_layoffs/

Nokia ends cruel and unusual 'Symbian programming' practices
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/10/22/nokia_explains_symbian_strategy_we_translate/

At the end, the analysis from The Register is that we are seeing the beggining of the end of Symbian.

Alright, alright - I apologize for my snarkiness then :)
I clicked the link I posted and it was perfect for me! What browser (and device) are you guys on?

Is that what happens to you every time you see Nokia fail?
I guess thats what happens as your stipend from nokia decreases with every passing year
I wish you luck with your n8 oh wait you haven't bought one yet have you, no worries i guess wom world will get around to giving you one if you ask nicely :crying:

Here's what happens: you have to open the link directly over the word 'comments'. If you click it further down the sentence, you get directed to Nokia USA and their product line up. Using Firefox BTW.

HAve you loaded any Roms or at least LauncherPro on the Captivate? I m not getting the whole frminine thing..but some people have referred to their inanimate devices as "sexy". I thankfully don't get a chubby with anything but the real thing.... Although the BB is businesslike to me. HTC just seemed so tiny. But I would have RATHER the HTC brand over Samsung. I am still not all jiggy about a refrigerator, TV and washer dryer company making my mobile phones.....Memory was one of the deciding factors for me. I did not weant to have to worry about App installs or real estate outside of the 16 gb SD card. Mt next phone will likely be a moto or HTC IF they have a screen like the Samsung.
My biggest niggle is the USB drivers needed.......and I don't think even lagfix fixes that with the redeux file system. All this talk about lagfix and some more reading last night at XDA and Im going to burn 2.2 9 today and see what lagfix is all about.

LOL you have been reading some of my posts in 2008 in the iPhone forum where I made few friends when comparing my 3GS I had for a second........ to the N97........ I did like the OS enough to buy an iTouch but hated the device as a phone and iTunes. Captivate is slightly better as a phone.
to pair with the Nokia. But am glad to retire it now. Actually it sits in a holder on my Bike for on the go music. But will get less use on upcoming colder days here at the beach. I am going to ride to North Carolina today to do a house call and mounting my "official Garmin" but I want to track the Samsung as well and compare the incomparable but I am not sure I want 2 hours of Map downloading with 200GB of data. LOL...

The pieces at the Register make for interesting reading, because the comments section seem to also include comments from Nokia staffers, or former Nokia staffers. The company is gutting their Symbian programmer work force. Everyone seems to be hinting that, while Nokia isn't 'dropping Symbian', the OS is no longer a priority. They may just continue to support some recent legacy, and current, devices.

I've tried to forget as much as I could about the Apple forum after I sold my 3Gs, although every once in a while I go back only to lurk just for the fanboi entertainment value...

when i click directly on the link it takes me to the nokia store.
when i right click open in a new tab it takes me to the comment you were referring to.

One reason to not to be an early adopter of a dead technology.......Nokia is seriously in disarray right now. Their saving grace are lower priced phones and E series. N series is in trouble.....but that is not really news for those of us who loved our N97s.

It's a new Nokia sales/marketing initiative created by Elop. Henceforth, all links to Nokia-owned web properties may be randomly directed to a checkout page for a shopping cart with an N8. :)

This is great news - exactly what users have been moaning about and asking for since we learned of the N8. The bottom line is that S^3 devices will get the UI that was planned for S^4, and everything else too.

I have Froyo on my HTC Desire for a month now. Its actually my third Froyo phone, following after the Nexus One and then the Droid Incredible. And now I am waiting for my i9000 Galaxy S to get Froyo.

Once Froyo came to my HTCs, the speed advantage of the Galaxy S got lost, although the Galaxy S has this visual and touch smoothness that the HTC phones could not match, which I suspect has something to do with the hardware. I do suspect that once the Galaxy S gets Froyo, you're going to see Quadrant scores in the region of the OMAP3640 used in the Droid 2 or the 8255 Snapdragon used on the Desire HD or MyTouch 4G. That's like way beyond the 8250 Snapdragon Quadrant scores used by the Desire, Nexus One and Droid Incredible.

Furthermore, the Froyo only GMail, Google Search widget and the new YouTube app is really neat. You can watch YouTube videos while viewing comments.

One thing that is holding up Samsung's Froyo update on the Galaxy S, is that it appears they are overhauling and feature adding Touchwiz along the update. HTC gets their Froyo update fast because they are only updating the OS, but not Sense, If you want the new Sense, buy those new HTCs like the Desire Z. To be fair, Sony Ericsson's long delayed Android 2.1 update for the Xperia X10 actually comes with a revised Rachel interface, plus new features added to the phone, like 720p video recording.

So yeah, its wise to see until both phones finally get their updates. Keep in mind that HTC's update isn't going to do a lot of changes with Sense, though it adds Google's News and Weather widget, which is excellent. Some changes on the SMS too, but pretty much, the phone looks the same except what's humming underneath makes it faster. You can now save some specific apps to the SD card as well like Google Earth and Google Sky Maps, to save space since the Desire is rather tight.

The Froyo update to the Galaxy S appears more than just a Froyo update but a Touchwiz facelift as well. We may get additional apps and features throw in too. I like especially to see how it deals with the file system lag problem.

What annoys me with Samsung is that its update has to be driven through the Samsung Kies PC sync program, unlike HTC which is on the air. Note it only affects international phones and users, not US Samsungs which does not use Kies. The update for the US or NAM phones is likely to be over the air.

Well, there will still be literally thousands of people working on it (about 3400 in Finland alone even after the cuts) so I would not necessarily jump to the conclusion that Symbian is on its death bed quite yet. Some portion of it is just cutting fat for sure. But, it does seem to suggest that Elop is putting even more emphasis on Meego and an integrated services offering layer across.
