No Money Left and Terminal

Hello, I am the caregiver for my brother-in-law who was diagnosed terminal and am trying to find monies to help him stay in the nursing home. I funded him for the first month and filed for SSDI, which was promptly turned down due to lack of credits. My question is about Texas Medicaid. I understand he has to remain in the care of the nursing home under hospice for a minimum of 30 days before becoming eligible to apply for assistance. Correct? And as I understand it, just because you were turned down for SSDI you may not be for Medicaid?

SSDI(Social Security Disability Income) and Medicaid in any US state are two completely separate things. A person doesn't have to have ever paid into social security to qualify for medicaid, rather they only have to show medical and financial need which seems to be the situation for your brother. There are also cases where you can apply for emergency Medicaid without having to wade through all of the red tape like healthy applicants usually do, so it's definately worth checking into.

I am sorry that you are having to experience such a devastating prognosis along with financial difficulty at the same time. I hope that you are assigned a compassionate social worker who can assist you through this painful ordeal. Generally, most nursing homes/hospitals/hospices and other health care facilities usually have a department or staff who are trained in assistance such as you need. I would inquire about it at the financial office where he is currently a patient and see if they could help you speed things along.

My VERY best to you and your brother. :)

Thanks for caring and your quick reply. Yes, we have the hospice service that has taken the Medicaid application for us and I'm assuming waiting for the 30 day clock to end to file. They said also I might be reimbursed for the first payment to the nursing home. It is really expensive ( $125 per day ) and I would highly recommend to all out there to obtain end care insurance if you can afford it. I am learning all of this hands on and to all out there with medical issues like this to educate yourself. Thank goodness for these forums and the good people who take time to respond to our questions. My God bless all of you.
