I have a 1999 Pontiac Sunfire; 203,000 miles on it and everything is factory, no aftermarket anything at all, and it has been taken care of. I got in my car after work tonight and I put it in reverse then drive & go to turn my low beams on, and I get nothing except the daytime running lights... switch to high beams and they work okay, but seem a little dim.

What will it take to fix this? Can I just buy replacement bulbs? Or the whole headlight assembly? Should I be able to do this myself or do I need to pay someone to do it, or get one of the guys at the parts store to help me out? I'm a college student and the money thing is a little rough, I hope this isn't a big fix, ANY help at all would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks for your time in reading this.
Any round figure estimates on how much things would cost would help me out a little also - thanks for your help! :)

It's unusual but not unheard of for both bulbs to go bad together. If you go to an Auto Zone they will put the bulbs in for you most times. I would have some one pull one out and see if the filament is bad. If the bulbs are not bad I would say you need a new head light switch.

Either you have a short in the low beam wiring or the bulb in low beam went which is a little unusual, because never have two bulbs in low beam have ever gone out, but these days nothing is impossible. Yes you can buy just the bulbs, I'd try it, Maybe you'll fix your trouble and have the pride in doing it yourself. On a scale of 1-10 I'd say its safe to say that it would be a 2. Also try this, With the headlight switch off, Pull the wired connector off then reinstall it, sometimes corrosion prevents a good solid connection and doing this sometimes repairs the trouble without buying new bulbs.
Merry Christmas
