No Interest In Avatar Whatsoever!!!

Avatar is visually stunning however the Na'vi looked CGI to me. The scene early on when Jake wakes up as the Na'vi and runs out to see the other Na'vi playing basketball (I think it was basketball), well, it cemented the feeling within me - they don't look real. I never got the sense they were truly real. The plants and flowers looked real but they didn't, they looked like the Hulk with anorexia! It's interesting to watch the final scenes of Avatar when Neytiri tries to help the dying Jake put on his oxygen mask, you can see there is a clear distinction between the real Sam Worthington being held by the CGI Neytiri. Real life people on film have more detail. You can see how CGI, even the most detailed, can't compare or capture the essence of real life. The lighting on CGI rarely matches real life when caught on film.

You can go back to the early 1990s and see how even the wonderful CGI dinosaurs of Jurassic Park never really matched the colour and lighting of the real 'filmed in real time' environment. It's close but not quite good enough to fool you and Avatar has the same effect. It's hard to truly believe the Na'vi are real although they do look very impressive.

I'd say Avatar reminded me of Who Framed Roger Rabbit - that combined cel drawing animation with real sets and real actors and this was the 21st century equivalent: CGI animation with real sets and real life actors. I'm sure Avatar will win the Oscar for best special effects. It does have mindboggling attention to detail, every plant, leaf, rock etc is brought to life in vivid detail, and the Na'vi facial movement is very close to real life expression. The story is a bit run-of-the-mill but the 3D CGI effects seem to have captivated a worldwide audience.

Am I the only one who thinks Avatar looks like one BIG yawn?
I haven't seen it nor do I want to.
I groaned at the trailer several months ago-even that bored me.
It looks like one long CGI crapfest, with about as much realism as video game.
Bring me real actors and a decent script ANYDAY.
Am I the only one?..I'm beginning to think so...:(

To be fair everyone I have spoken to has said the film is amazing. I have seen the trailers and it does look stunning. However for the life of me it just did not grab me. The blue aliens just looked boring to me, much in the same way as Jar Jar Binks. I absolutely love scifi movies which even confuses me as I am sure this film has it all, but it simply doesn't attract me.

The trouble is humans often make decisions based on not much more than 'gut reaction'. We all do it, it's a standard trait of the species. Trying to be rational at all times is one of the hardest things we do. Largely because obstinately rational people are often annoying as they ruthlessly see through our irrationalities, and no one likes that much.

As someone else said "Look at the poster!"

Blue Aliens and Spaceships, what do you expect, "Citizen Kane".

I loved it and have seen it with various others in my life, 4 times and would be happy to see it again.

Each to their own, I guess, as anything about the magical middle ages, middle earth nonsense turns me off, no matter how good the acting/effects are.:D

Absolutely the same for me. I so want to like this film and so want to have the spell-bound amazing experience that just about everyone says they have that I think the idea of risking disappointment at it is putting me off from going to see it. The idea of seeing the film seems better to me than actually seeing it..
Weird...

Me too - until my daughter persuaded me to go and see it this afternoon (Orange Wednesday!) and all I can say is WOW:eek: , it blew me away and deserves to win every Oscar it's been nominated for.

If you've got no interest then why start a thread on it, interested in slagging off a perfectly good film is still interested.

Thread Fail.

It seems that some folks simply can't stand success. The more something's a success the more they hate it, no matter what.

Odd creatures, humans, by and large.

You know, honestly it really doesnt sound like my thing at all. I genuinely thought I was going to be bored helplessly by it, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a really great film :)

That he does. After 12 years since his last film though, and all his "king of the world" style hijinks at the Oscars where he looked like he was going bonkers, I had this all down to be the one where he lost the plot. More fool me.:o

I was much like the OP in regard to Avatar. . until I sat down in front of my telly and watched it yesterday. OK, the plot and dialogue is far from good, and it's far too hamfisted in its attempts at social comment, but on all levels, it's visually stunning to a level I just didn't expect. It makes Transformers look 30 years old.

And parts of it are acutally quite emotionally engaging which I didn't see coming.

The second I saw a teeny bit of a trailer, not knowing anything about the film whatsoever...I was very intrigued. I knew I wanted to see it.

I wasn't disappointed...it transported me into their world, which I didn't want to leave. I loved it. :D

It's a visually stunning film. I was awed by the pretty. I was excited but cautious when I went to see it because of all the hype; but honestly, underneath all of the visual effects, I just found the story frankly uninspiring.

Still, James Cameron is who Michael Bay dreams to be. :p
