No decent films!!

Where are the decent(or half decent) films. For weeks I've looked to see what's on and it's Pirates, Spiderman etc etc. I can watch mindless rubbish as well as anyone but I do long for something a bit more thoughtful. Did try to see Lives of Others but it wasn't shown near here. Is it just because it's the summer or a sad sign of the movie times?

Tell No One could be coming to a cinema near you this Friday. It's a French adaptation of a Harlen Coben crime novel, with strong performances from Francois Cluzet, Kristin Scott-Thomas (in French), Nathalie Baye and a standout turn from the rather scary Gilles Lellouche. It's definitely a commercial film - there's a spectacular chase which literally stopped the traffic on the Paris peripherique - but Guillaume Canet's direction is intelligent and subtle.

Thing is, if subtitled films actually get as far as the local multiplexes then people have to go and see them or it won't happen again. If this one does well, maybe The Lives Of Others and other more cerebral fare will get a wider release.

Zodiac - long, involved, intelligent with stunning performances to the three main leaRAB and all supporting actors/actresses

It's traditional that summer is when all the big, dumb expensive movies come out. The darker months particularly around Oscar time is when the smarter flicks get a release so they don't get overlooked.

I've recently seen Mr.Brooks, Disturbia and Premonitions and I can say I enjoyed them all. They were written well and the acting was good. Can recommend each and all!
Saw Pirates 3, really enjoyed, can't believe what some people say about it! Want to see Spider3 and Shrek3, despite reviews!
Also want to see Oceans 13 and the Anthony Hopkins films, Fracture, they look interesting!

Did you check the cinema listings on the Tell No One web site? I'm surprised it's not getting a wider release this week but maybe it'll get the Vue Monday night treatment later.

As a long-time Unlimited cinema-goer, I can confirm that two dreary times of year for good films are Christmas and Summer.

My local Cineworld has 10 screens, but for over a month now has only been showing 5 or 6 films. I'm missing going to the cinema 4 times a week, because there aren't any films. :)

Totally agree with this. I have had an Unlimited card for years. My local Cineworld only has six screens so it is even worse. POTC was on three of the six screens on its first week and FOUR out of six at 8pm each night. From this Friday Fantastic Four is on two screens (which i am amazed at as I thought the first film was considered a flop, although I quite enjoyed it) and POTC is still on two screens so still only 4 films to choose from. Mind you I expect 10 screen cinemas were showing POTC on six screens so still not much better.

I know this this completeley off the wall and rather daring, but have you considered buying or renting any DVRAB by Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford, Michael Curtiz, Preston Sturges, Michael Powell, Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese or David Lynch to name but a few.
Between them they made quite a few "decent" films.

It would be great (from an Unlimited stand-point) if mulitplexes did exactly that: when there are fewer new films, put on a few classics.

Could even theme them and call it a season - radical suggestions abound on RAB :) :)

Wouldn't that be great. Imagine seeing great classics like The Third Man on a big screen.

I wanted to go to the cinema on Sunday. I did a search for Water, Tell no one, Zodiac and The lives of others. I live within easy drivng distance of 6 cinemas but nothing. I would have to drive to London, three quarters of an hour , with all the hassle and expense. Will watch something on DVD at home.
