no data plan = no G1?

Bloody Mess

New member
i went to my local t-mobile store to buy a new G1 but i didn't want to add the data plan right away . when i asked her if i can just buy the phone without the data plan she said , no i had to get the data plan. is this true or she didn't really know what she was takling about?

maybe she meant i had to get the data plan to use the device?

and if i call right now to cancel the data plan for the G1 will i still get charged for the data the first month?

You must have the data plan to purchase that is correct. honestly what is the point of owning the device with out a data plan anyway??

You need a data plan + a voice plan, &you need over a certain voice plan to be able to get the data plan.

Data plan is mandatory, can't use the phone without it.

because my other G1 bricked on me. they told me it would take almost a month to get a replacement so i just told them im returning it and getting a new phone at my local t-mobile and to refund my money

so i went to my local t-mobile store and had to add a line to my current account in order to get the discount of 179 . so i did that and just created it into a family plan but i didn't need the seperate data plan for the other phone line .

i believe we have established that the G1 works without a data plan but are limited on features. I was wondering what features exactly work and don't work. For example, does the app market work? Can i download and use apps that do not require the internet? Can i browse the web via wi-fi? Can i send txt messages? Make Calls? Send Emails, etc.

Thanks

Should be able to browse, email using WIFI and text is sent through the voice plan. The only thing I am not sure about the app store, though I use it using WIFI with no problem. I don't know if it is different if you activate without the dataplan.

Get the data plan and then cancel it after the first month thats what i did. I have wifi everywhere so its a waste of money for me.

There's no waiting period, you can even remove the data line online. You'll need data to activate the phone but after that WiFi is enough. There are several apps in Market for this purpose. MY Mother-in-law's phone is wifi only.

hey guyz.. i 'm a gal frm asia. my sister sent me a t-mobile g1. which she had been using for a year. i recently factory reseted my g1. so now i hav access to nothing n the phn is locked.. how can i get data plan or make it work agai

you can future bill the data plan. especially if you were on another phone prior to getting the G1. I opted for this option when they offered it to me, the only downside? having to wait two weeks for them to activate my data plan.

There are multiple threads here, so I'm not sure which apply to me. I use T-Mobile. I want to upgrade to an Android phone. I'm told I must add a data plan, which I don't want. Do I understand correctly that maybe I can add another LINE with a data plan (ie. no data plan on my current two lines), and then cancel that line (and its accompanying data plan), and without a penalty?

If I can't do that, and I MUST have a data plan, I hope to use the limited (200MB/month). I don't plan to use email, download music/video - any of that stuff. The only kind of app I'm interested in would be a golf GPS app. I would hope it would only use GPS, which is free. But the T-Mobile people thought it would use "data" and push me over the 200MB/month. Can someone address
this?

Thanks!

I used to have a G1. You do have to buy a Data Plan with it. I removed the data plan by calling T-Mobile and telling them that I am switching phones because I can't afford the plan. They removed the data plan. After I switched back to the G1, it was fully functional without 3G
