No AC + MS + Aug = blah

Two years ago our old air conditioner died during the summer. We had Sander's Gas replace the entire system, inside unit and outside unit. A year later during the summer it quit. We were told that the compressor had gone out due to power surges. The compressor has a lifetime warranty, but the labor to put it in wasn't covered. Apparently I neglected to send in the proper paperwork to get that aspect of it covered on a warranty. I was under impression it came included in the final price we paid, it seems I was mistaken. $700 later and we have a cool house again.

Now, a year later during the summer, we get home from vacation and find that the air isn't working. The Sander's guy comes by and says the compressor has died again.

We're searching for other opinions now about what could possibly be causing this and if the problem is found how much would it cost for someone else to fix said problem cause we just don't trust Sander's anymore at this point.

In the meantime we've holed up in just a couple rooms of the house that a window unit can effectively cool. We are not happy campers.
 
That fucking sucks man. I live in Northern MS and having no AC is the complete suck. Mine went out this summer and it took me about 2 weeks to get it fixed. You definitely have my sympathy. :)
 
As a few of you know, I'm from Saskatchewan, Canada. We get both ends of the spectrum here, with extreme heat in the summer and extreme cold in the winter.

The last while we've had a couple fairly hot spells, and although I have A/C in my work car at at work, I don't have it at home. So I sweat alot in the evenings and weekends when I'm sitting at home. Especially cuz I use a laptop computer, of course on my lap.

I'll be looking for a window A/C unit one of these days.
 
Take a trip down to the dirty south and we will show you what true heat is like. Nothing like 100% humidity with 120+ heat index to get you feeling real nice like.
 
Eh, just come up here in January or February, and feel our cold temps. And here it ain't just cold, it's windy at the same time. We'll quite often have windchill temps of about -45 degree Celcius or so. And believe me, windchill is worse than plain old cold with no wind!
 
Hey, Where about the same height...thingy you and I. We don't have an AC at home, but it's more of having a fan/doors/windows open. And in winter having warm clothes :D

and as for you Bluthundur, that really sucks :( I hope it get's fixed properly or..you know doesnt brake
 
Dusty, it would help to have all the windows open and such, if there was a wind to blow it through the house. When it's hot here, it's pretty much dead calm. When it's cold it's usually windy. I used to work a little ways up north and up there it got colder, but when it was cold it wasn't windy. It wasn't that bad. Well, it still sucked to work out in the cold.

But anyways. Yeah, Blu, hot weather sucks without air conditioning.
 
I used to live muchhhh further North than I do now. I was born up in Annapolis, MD. I have an uncle who used to live in Canada and visited a few times in the winter. It was cold, very cold, but I rather enjoy cold weather. :D
 
You can always put on more clothes when it's cold outside, but you're really limited in the amout of clothing you can effectively remove when you start getting hot.

If, indeed you're getting power surges, I'd call the electric company and tell them about your problem, they may have a dying transformer or insulator that goes wonky whenever it gets hot, or whenever it rains, or whenever the wind blows from a particular direction. Oftentimes they don't know about problems like that until someone reports them. If they don't find anything, I'd ask them or a licensed electrician about ways to protect your whole house from surges. It may be as simple as installing a different breaker. The power company shouldn't like it that you're getting power surges, if you can see it, that means something REALLY wonky is happening on their end.


I'd also call the company who manufactured your particular A/C system direct, and find another retailer in your area, and have them inspect your system for faulty install and possibly make repairs. Either way, another quote/estimate of necessary repairs is always a nice thing to have in case something is discovered to be faulty.

Electrical surges are the popular theory. We need to get the part replaced and in working order before they can start to isolate the problem. We're looking into surge protectors for the unit or perhaps for the whole house, cause they are a problem. It's not uncommon for the lights to flicker during a bad storm or for a nearby transformer to asplode. Thanks for the tips.
 
I agree power surges might be the AC killer. And I personally know that you house even with the windows open and fans going is hot as hell.
