At launch, the DS had few interesting games. The "Mario" name can only be whored around so much. But, anyway, I was skeptical at first when I started playing it. My friend soon sold his, but I just stuck with it. Btw, my first DS had a red dead pixel.
Maybe it's the graphics? The awkward position you must put it in your hand? The sillyness of being caught with it? I didn't think the system would thrived against competition like the Sony PSP. But, looking at it now, I think it's doing damn fine. The DS Lite was a smart move making it even more fashionable and easier to use than the first model.
In my experience, it's not about how cool or advanced the DS uses its stylus.. but it's still about the games/software. I found that I played Contact, New Super Mario Bros., Brain Age more often than GTA, Wipeout Pure & Need For Speed: Underground Rivals.
Don't get me wrong, I think both systems technologically rock. I once hated on the DS, but now I am beginning to open my eyes and see the system for what it is. After playing the Wii I realize that it's about having fun and not having the best graphics. The Wii could have done a bit more on the visual part, I agree with some, but nonetheless I am excited to be using new technology.
The PSP seems to try so hard to be like a PS1/PS2 that you can see it in its loading times, graphics and media management. And most games are ports as well. Still, I am happy to be in this day and age to able to carry around 3D graphics in the palm of my hand.
And if anyone disagrees with the Wii and how its a "gimmick", did you really play it at all? My stomach was in knots when I brought it home and starting toying around with it. I thought it'd suck. But it really is pretty cool.
