Ninja Turtles - The Lost Season Talkback (spoilers)

Well the lost season of TMNT has been released in Australia, and through methods that shall not be revealed in this thread, it is now possible to see the final 12 episodes of the pre-Fast Forward series.

I can put up mini-reviews and spoilers if anyone wants them, but has anyone else seen this yet that we can generate a bit of discussion?

I've seen one spoiler picture that already reveals too much. Some characters that have no tie up arch in FF either through flashbacks or appearances are in this series. It's not just the turtles and Splinter.

In terms of a big, epic battle to end the series on, it's a much better finale than Utrom Shredder's cop-out exile. Lots of wall-to-wall action.

Otherwise, you get your usual cop-out moments and missed chances, as well as cheesy writing and acting. One major supporting character is notably MIA, which disappointed me.

In other words, it's nothing better or worse than the previous 4 seasons, it's exactly the same quality. But depending on who you ask, thats still a lot better than Fast Forward.

I was personally satisfied with what I saw.
It would have been even cooler if Leatherhead, and maybe the Guardians and Utroms were involved in the final battle.

After I saw episodes of the fifth season, I thought it was criminal, them giving us Fast Forward instead. I've seen some of the Fast Forward episodes before, but stopped watching when I found out Bishop would be involved. I thought it might spoil too much. I bought the Fast Forward DVD, but didn't start watching until I got to see the fifth season. However, now that I've seen the fifth season, I can actually appreciate Fast Forward a bit more. I still think the first five seasons kill Fast Forward though.

I think I might know who you're talking about, but would you mind PMing me and telling me who that is?

Agreed, for the most part. Personally, I really think they should just have scrapped Past Present (which, despite cool monsters, is almost pure filler) and made the season finale a three-parter; some part of the finale really needed some more meat to it, like the reappearance of the Acolytes, the way the Shredder's Heralds are dispatched.

Still, I'm dissapointed at the final product. While there's a lot of good--interesting new characters; updates on some missing ones, a generally interesting new status quo; some of the most intense scenes in American animation; cool character/monster designs (the designers clearly had fun here); Naruto done better than Naruto itself--it's also my least favorite arc: plot threads which should be put to rest are left open (hey, Karai); stuff that really should be developed is not; and the writers pull stuff out of their ass once too often. It also feels far too weird to have the turtles actually save the world for once; as a guy who liked how the turtles could sometimes seem like supporting cast in their own show, it's jarring to see them as epic heroes.

The episodes also give some insight into weird Fast Forward stuff. It makes clear, for example, that Greg Carey has been missing since half-way through Season 4's production. It also explains stuff like Mikey's Fast Forward Turtle Titan costume and the unnamed golden Justice Forcer in The Journal.

One thing, I really appreciated, thought. I finally know who the actress (currently) voicing Karai is. It becomes obvious during the first two-parter. Surprising, really.

In the end, it makes for a decent--if by no means perfect--"end" to the series. While I always thought bringing the turtles to the future was the next logical step for them, I'll go further now: there was no way the series could have continued, as is. There's nowhere else to go, action-wise. The stakes can go no higher. Also, on an unrelated note, Bishop once again proves how awesome he truly is.

Agree on the Acolytes. They were too obviously written as cannon fodder, and the only thing worse than being cannon fodder is being resurrected from the dead without much explanation. Heck the folks who brought them back, the tribunal, also came back without much logic. And "we had to let fate run its course" doesn't count.

I'm willing to cut the heralds some slack though - once the turtles began exercising their mystic powers, it was obvious the heralds were no match for them. In fact the heralds could've been dispatched during the first two-parter easily.

Some of that I figured out on my own, but it was nice to see it confirmed. What exactly happened to Greg Carey? While the show hasnt always demanded the highest quality of voice-acting, Carey was generally solid compared to the replacement.

I'll bite. Who is it? And did Chaplain get a new VA? He sounded pretty much like Donatello in season 3, and theres a noticible difference here now.

Good to see you again Ian. The dry spell has scattered all the TMNT fans. ;)

Nobody knows. According to Wayne Grayson, Carey "dropped of the face of the Earth." It didn't truly become noticeable until The Journal, which contain Hun's first speaking role since Still Nobody, but in retrospect, it's clear he's been missing since midway throught Season 4's production, when Leatherhead (also voiced by Carey, apparently) was suddenly recast. Unfortunately, unlike with Leatherhead, Hun's replacement...well, sucks. Personally, I think Michael Alston Bailey (Crocodile) would have been a better replacement--he wouldn't sound much like Carey's Hun, but I think he could bring the right amount of intelligence and confidence the character needs.

As for Karai, it seems clear to me from New World Order pt. 1 that she's voiced (at least here--I've heard that she's been recast at least once) by none other than Kayzie Rogers. Those initial cries for help in the turtles' dream sequence were pure Vivi.

As for Chaplin, yeah, I'm pretty sure he's been recast as well. If you ask me, he kinda sounds like Sinterniklaas (Leonardo) now. Still, the change isn't jarring, and it fits his new design well enough.

Spoil away please with what went on with the Karai parts of the storyline!!!

I know
she's a target of the Shredder's for some reason, and that the turtles come to her aide....Why is the Shredder after her? Why do the turtles care about her after what she did to them? What's up with her and Chaplin?

What happens to her?

Does she "come to her senses" about the turtles? Or does she just team up with them temporarily (if at all)?

ALL the details please, hopefully they'll satisfy me until the dvd set is released over here!

Also, on the topic of VA's.

Karai does sound different to me from when we were first introduced to her, so I do think she had been recast at some point...wish we could be told who it was. Always annoyed me how lazy they were with the end credits of the show...

Also, I thought Leatherhead's replacement voice for Season 4 was HORRIBLE. He seriously sucked!

I don't think I've heard the new Hun voice, but if it's the same replacement VA doing him...then his awful job doesn't suprise me.

I was going to until I heard that they were doing season sets for TMNT.

I figured that if they were re-releasing season 1, then it's safe to assume they'll be re-releasing the rest of the show...and then finally release the Lost Season (why else would they wait to release it?).

I'd rather have the show all in the same region, so I don't mind waiting a little longer.

The Tengu Shredder targets her because it feels that by taking on the mantle of the Shredder, she defiles the name and such. The Turtles come to her aide because the four of them, Splinter and the Ancient One all had visions indicating to them that Karai had her own part to play in stopping the Tengu Shredder and had to be kept alive.

The Tengu Shredder injures her, but Chaplain and the Turtles rescue her and April bandages her wounds. She recovers, and they all learn that all those who have taken the mantle of the Shredder, including the Utrom imposter and Karai, share a telepathic energy link with the Tengu Shredder, giving them the ability to sap the Tengu of his demonic power through the link. She declares a "temporary" truce with the Turtles, and plays that very role during the final battle, sapping the Tengu Shredder's immense strength, weakening him enough for the Turtles to defeat him once and for all.

Chaplin has an obvious affection for Karai, which seems unrequited, but at the very end of the finale, Karai takes Chaplain's hand and walks off into the sunrise, stating that it's a new day and wondering what it will bring.

Whether Karai has softened her stance on the Turtles is not implicitly stated, however it seems logical enough - they did save her life and her empire from a demon bent on world domination - and in the Fast Forward episode "The Journal", when Leonardo returns to the Ninja Tribunal's monastery to continue his training, he encounters Karai there as well, who actually says it's "good to see him." Despite that, Leo still doesn't trust her completely. Keep in mind, the journal the Turtles read in that episode was actually a fabrication created by Cody, and therefore none of the events described in its pages actually happen (happened?). With that said, I would think that in order to make the journal believable at first read, Cody would have had to create it with the historical truth in mind, such as having Karai drop her grudge against the Turtles, as it is what Leonardo would expect to find in a journal of the events following the Turtles' return to the present, based on the resolution of the Tengu Shredder conflict.

Well let's hope they're that smart.

If it does get released, then I'm thinking it'll be a really long time until it does. The first half of the first season is coming out in May, and the other half of it is due out in September. So they're really going to have to speed up the other releases if they plan to get season 5 out on DVD quick enough. If they put out each set every four months, we won't get our fifth season on DVD in region 1 until 2010.

Besides, the Australian DVD of the fifth season doesn't even have the "The Ninja Tribunal" episode on it.

I also wonder if "Nightmares Recycled" will ever get completed.

I'm almost finished watching Season 5, since I only got the two part Season finale to watch now. All I can say about it so far. This season gets better by the epsidoe that you need to watch next episode right away.

It was nice to see Sliver Sentery, Amanda, and Nobody again in the Justice Force recurit episode. And it was cool to see Nano join the group. Since I did like the Nano episodes a lot. I kinda wished now that they animated, Nightmare Recylced. I thought the Turtles Dragon forms were sweet and bad ass at the same time.

I'll give a kinda full review, how I felt about the entire season once I watch the two part season finale that I can't wait to watch. ^_^.

OK, I splurged myself and watched the remaining 4 or 5 episodes.

Fathers and Sons was quite enjoyable. Nice to see an even younger version of the turtles than what we got in Tales of Leo.

The Unexplained appearance of Yoshi was quite a surprise, but it was a rather nice touch to finally see him 'sort of' get his revenge on Shredder. Another shocking surprise was the Karai/Chaplan 'hookup' that we are left guessing took place.

Also, Huns new voice was irritating at first...it's just not as Deep or cool sounding as Greg Carey's voice.... but you soon get used to it and it's not horrible..

There's OH so much more to see....if there's a final season after they return home from the future, I could see the show wrapping up in one or two more seasons. If they knew FF was going to be light, I think they PURPOSELY made this as dark as possible for the real comic fans :). When you see this season, you realize it's more than just a toy driven show, but rather a living comic book.

PERFECT for a Toonami marathon airing.

I hated the new Hun but was glad Leatherhead was spared a terrible replacement voice. No Leatherhead is better than one that sounds awful.

Seeing the old art style again really make Fast Forward look bad. The Lost Season had a limited budget yet still manages to beat it's successor hands down. And of course, it made the censorship in Fast Forward look all the more ridiculous. "Shell" is not a dirty word.

My favorite episode is Fathers and Sons. It did an excellent job honoring the show's continuity.
We see how Splinter knows The Ancient One, saw the burial of Yoshi and had a little adventure thrown in as well.

Yoshi had Splinter as a pet during the time he was being raised and trained by the Ancient One, and Splinter clearly remembers people and events from before he was mutated, so Fathers and Sons wasn't Splinter's first-ever meeting with the Ancient One. If it had been, how would he have known where, how and why to find the Ancient One to lay Yoshi's ashes to rest?
