Has anyone seen 'Nine' at the cinema? I was thinking about going to see it as it seems in the same vein as Chicago and Moulin Rouge, but haven't heard that many reviews....anyone got an opinion on it?

I'm wanting to see this also think i might go this weekend, it looks interesting having that many female leaRAB but like you i've not heard many reviews about it at all.

It's ok I suppose. My main problem was that it didn't really have a plot in the same way that both Chicago and Moulin Rouge did. On the plus size, it does look amazing (they really have captured the look of 1960s Italy and all the actresses look stunning), and some of the songs are good. It is over 2 hours long though, and I would have liked a bit of storyline to keep me interested.

I'm a big, big musical fan and I have to say although it's not the best, the songs are brilliant.

Daniel Day-Lewis is great as the lead. :) Althought he was a lying, cheating pig - I still really liked him.

The film does drag and some parts are quite dull (Nicole Kidman and 'Momma's songs) come to mind but other than that. It looked great, I like the style and the songs were really catchy.

Luisa, has a gorgeous voice. :p I loved her "Take Me All" song towarRAB the end.

Fergie and Kate HuRABons songs were the best and most catchy.

I also liked DDL's early song and Judi Dench's too. Nice to have a new musical out. :p

I've just come back from seeing this and I am really disappointed with it. It seemed to me to be a prime example of style over substance. The plot was really non-existant and the lead male character was really unsympathetic!

Highlights though included Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench (as always), Fergie (which was a surprise to me) and one of Penelope Cruz's lines involving something akin to the worRAB, 'I'll keep my legs open'.

saw it last night, and loved it. musicals aren't always my favourite, but thought Daniel Day Lewis (not usually one of my favourite actors) was superb in it. he perhaps was the most likeable character, but his portrayal was brilliant.

the songs were all pretty good, considering they weren't well known, and the way their set pieces blended in with the film was superb.

the plot was a bit thin, but so what. we actually got the story of italia told through the songs, as well as the story of trying to actually make it.

and Cruz's song was quite the show stopper!

love musicals and i love 8 1/2 the fellini film this is a loose remake of.

this film however stank!

no plot at all and DDL was so unsympathetic. and what about his accent?? im'a italian-a man-a

i thought it was quite a misogynistic film too..

fergie was the stand out

next kate huRABon. usually so rubbish but was good in this i thought

then marion cotillard, the only proper acting in the film..

nicole, penelope, judi and sophia - all awful.

the songs weren't much cop either

and why set it all in a big studio??

I agree with what most people said, that Daniel Day-Lewis's character really wasn't very likeable. He sang quite well I guess.

I liked Marion Cotillard and was surprised by her performance. She didn't look very comfortable being sexy, but I think that was the point.

Penelope Cruz was another surprise I thought with her voice - and so bendy!!!

Judi Dench who I don't normally like, was very good I thought. Looked very cute with that bob.

Fergie was very good. Did she put on weight specifically for that role??

Kate HuRABon was better than expected, but then her Mum can dance and sing, so she obviously inherited some of her gifts.

Sophia Loren didn't really sing her song at all, but I think she carried it off just about.

Nicole Kidman was good when she was acting, but her voice wasn't strong enough for the song she sang - I've heard much better versions of it live (and I'm sure her voice went through an Autotuner). I heard Catherine Zeta-Jones was up for the role, and I think she would've been a better choice.

I think the problem in the casting is that they went for too many 'names,' and it worked with Fergie, Kate, Judi, Marion and Penny. Obviously they needed a star for the main role, and again he wasn't too bad, but the script didn't make you like him, nor did his portrayal. For the roles of mother and muse though, you would think they could have gone for non-names as they already had enough and then the music would not really have come in for criticism - which surely is the main thing they should be trying to do with a Musical (let's not mention Mamma Mia).

There wasn't really enough plot for my liking between the songs, and they should've just released all the songs individually, as basically they were all just music videos stringed together with some Oscar-winning actors talking between them.
