I have a Canon a650 IS. Is it possible to get photos of friends and such events at night without the flash or is it just better to use the flash? Using different ISO, aperature, and shutter speeds seems like a pain to try to get these kinds of action shots at night.

You need to take a few test shots first (do it at home--don't wait until you're there). Set the ISO to 1,600 or the max at 3,200 and see what happens. Don't use flash--it will ruin the lights they set up.

Hope my samples give you some idea.s

unless you have time to study exposure, use auto and the flash and you wont have pain when you get back to the computer

If it is dark, just try setting it to Manual... if there enough light AROUND then you can probably set it to ISO 1600 (or whatever your highest is), the lowest number aperture available (to let in more light) and they play around with the shutter speed (no lower than 1/60 if handholding)...

OR you could use the flash, but set it lower than normal so it doesn't make everything too bright... you could also turn down the exposure for the same effect.
