I recently purchased the 2 DVD edition of the Russian movie Night watch The set includes -
Disc 1 - Russian version / English version (I assume dubbed though no mention)
Disc 2 - Theatrical version (I assume Russian)

I prefer to watch movies subbed rather than dubbed so can anybody plase tell me which is the best version to watch first?

I cannot tell you which one to watch as I have only seen the subbed version and can recommend the film subbed

I also would rather see films subbed than dubbed, with the exceptions of dubbed cartoon films

This is one film I didn't quite get, would watching the first film of the series have helped?

*Edit* I thought this was the second film in a series. Am I wrong?

The one i got had the entire menu all in russian and i had to guess what was what, so i dont know if i saw the theatrical version... whats the difference can anyone say between the two?

But sub sub sub every time!!! Amazing film, ive had to watch it about 8 times and each time i understand it a little better. In fact, i thin k i am going to watch it tonight!

it's the first of a trilogy of stories ..... night (Nochnoy Dozor), day (Dnevnoy dozor, which is out i the second half of the year) and dusk (Nochnoy dozor 3, which should be out in mid 2008)!

i believe there are two versions of the subtitles ..... one are the ordinary and the other (on disk2) are the fancier subs that are more interactive to what's going on on the screen

I've got this on DVD, but only the one disk version.

I watched it dubbed 3 times (once myself, once with my wife & once with my son). I usually watch foreign language films subbed rather than dubbed. Not sure why I haven't with this one. Might do when I get it back - it's out on loan 'cause I recommended it to several people.

Hope you enjoy it.

I'm reading the book just now.

Excellent, thanks for the replies.
I'll start with the theatrical version subbed and watch the other subbed version later.
Though now I've decided I need to buy the books too after finding them almost halfprice (with the good Pound to Dollar rate) on amazon.com

I watched this again last night after watching this thread and have since been on the official website.

The trailer, i am almost 100% positive, had bits in that were not on the version i watched.

If you watch both, please, please, please come back and let me know the differences if there are any :) Thanks

Hi Daisy,

I just looked at the trailer on the website - could only get the second one to work (not the Viral one).

I didn't see any bits that weren't on the DVD I've got.

Don't get the UK rental disc of this film if you prefer the subtitled option. It's supposed to have subtitles but they are designed for deaf people so you get all the sound descriptions and they reflect what is said in the dub rather than the actual translation. Basically a total mess. The proper retail version is a different story.

Definately watch the original theatrical version - it contains a few story elements sliced out of Fox' UK release.

The Fox UK and international release does however treat the subtitles more as part of the story, sweeping in from different angles, different colours etc, wheres the original theatrical will just be basic subs. The original Russian R5 DVD release had English subs the were grammatically 'dodgy' in a few places.

Be sure to catch the sequel 'Day Watch' too - it's out on Russian R5 DVD, though be aware that this release does not have English subs. Theres no UK release date for 'Day Watch' as yet.
