Elie characterizes himself in Night as a young boy, that has much to take in. He learns quickly and right from the start knows he must be smart to survive. He shows how his wits and determination are what get him through his toughest battles.
The town that he lived in as a child was a Jewish ghetto, rather small, where everything was fairly pleasant. However when the Nazi's came the mood turned into utter panic and the community grew farther apart.
His tone is sincere and shows the true stuggles he would face every waking hour. Not a sentence was read where i could not feel how his emotions and thoughts were all tied to the gim idea of death lurking in his mind. He never appeared to be joyous, and his way of telling his story was very serious.
