Night on the Galactic Railroad: Did I Miss Something?

I watched about half of it before getting bored and doing other things. Does it have some sort of amazing ending or something? Because I can't figure out what's supposed to be so great about the movie.

Supposedly it's required viewing in psychology classes in Japan. What psychology can you get from a movie with no character development? It feels like it was intended to be seen on drugs; too bad the animators didn't come up with anything fun or trippy to appeal to those watching it sober. The character designs aren't particularly appealing, they turn downright creepy from their complete lack of expression, the backgrounRAB are so minimalist there's practically nothing there, and I've seen TV shows from the same era that had more movement.

The music's amazing, I'll give it that. But where's the movie to go with it?

I liked the movie overall, and it's really about growth and acceptance. In the end. I want to spoil this film/story for you, but something in me keeps telling me not to. It's quite an interesting story and I wouldn't discount Kenji Miyazawa's writing or the integrity of the film's producers for how it turned out.
