Nexus One/Desire minor differences need clearing?

Ok so i have done ALOT of research into the two phones as ive been offered both as a replacement for my dreadful nokia n97. I can see both share same internals (bar extra RAM on desire) etc etc

But what im interested in is clarification on the few minor things that googling seems to provide inconsistent or not all that reliable results.

Ok first.

Does the desire now support the same text-to-speech as the nexus?

...

Does the desire support the "live" wallpapers as standard

...

Are the HTC widgets on the desire that much better (i can see the ui overall looks more appealing)

...

Does the desire boast the same gps features? eg turn by turn nav (is this even supported in the uk on the nexus?)

....

Whats the latest htc desire ROM with sense for the nexus (to put sense onto the nexus) all i can find are alphas from February. Surely progress has been made since?

Finally, what do you honestly think looks better? I know this is highly opinionated but i havnt had the chance to look at both at the same time to compare. Im leaning towards the nexus being prettier but i think thats more so down to the colour as the desire seems to be a horrible purple brown reminiscent of my old Nokia flip business phone with snake 2.0! (now were going back years).

Cheers for all your help in advance.

I can't answer any of that.. but the Nexus one looks better.

That being said.. I would still get the Desire just because I feel the Nexus has been getting more bad press lately (Less accurate screen, 3g issues etc), plus the boost in RAM.

I do appreciate the dedicated call buttons on the Desire below the screen.

Yes it does, thank you!

I think im now leaning towards the desire. Im more after features than looks (you can tell when ive had a N97, its a brick!)

Just wish it wasnt such a silly colour and didnt have a chin.

Thanks, hope ill be here much more often, hopefully for good reasons.

EDIT: One last little thing, like in the picture of the nexus in post 2, does the desire have the same streetview style gps or not, this is quite a big app for me as i do use my ovi maps a lot and couldnt live without it or another similarly good gps. So having this extra feature would just about clinch it for the desire.

I have to disagree about the looks of the phone. It's just my opinion though. I've seen a Desire and Nexus One side by side, and I think the Desire looks better. I think the optical trackball improves the look of it. You can get three colours of the Desire too - dark brown (most common), charcoal, and black. I also feel the physical buttons for the 4 buttons at the bottom of the phone are a lot easier to use than the touch screen style buttons on the Nexus One. On nearly all touch screens, they are relatively insensitive at the edges of the screen.

Does Sense UI actually support Live Wallpapers? That was something I couldn't find out.

Commercially released versions of the Desire (i.e. NOT the pre-release demo ones as seen on YouTube) do NOT have Android Home (unless you root), so you can't kill Sense and drop back to Android Home to use Live Wallpapers, as if you do kill Sense it'll simply restart it. That said, I don't know if Sense UI supports Live Wallpapers or not. Does it? There seemed to be an implication that when you dropped back to Android Home (on the pre-release phones) you could then access the Android live wallpapers, which in turn implies that Sense didn't have them.

The best Desire ROMs seem to be done by Modaco, as best as I can tell - never actually used one yet, but their site allows you to cook your own ROM with just the features you want - brilliant.

I do like the look of the track ball but prefer the look overall of the nexus, i like the look of the buttons but know i would hate using them so style over substance there lol.

And i was interested about live wallpapers, they look cool but you never see a desire with them on the net.

One last thing, im very confused about the dock connectors for the desire, some models have them some dont, some review complain about the lack, other comment on its good having them, what do i trust? Which ones the pre-release and which is the mass market? If the market ones have the connectors, what dock should i be looking at and what functionality does the dock have (charging/stand/alarm?)

Ok - on seeing the dock connector on that picture I take back what I said earlier. I was looking for much bigger connector pads, so I may have mistaken them for vents or those holes you get to tie a cord to. I'll check again next time I'm near a phone store.

Trust me on this one - you can't (at least on ALL of the released versions I've seen and heard of people actually using in person).

There are a few YouTube videos showing HTC Sense being disabled by killing the Sense process and then hitting Home. The phone then asks you which Home application to use (Android Home or Sense). However, this only seems to apply to the pre-release demo handsets that people got their hands on.

There are at least two threads on this forum (see post #7 onwards on this thread for example http://rabroad.com/forums/f7/sync-one-group-of-contacts-only-with-android-htc-desire-34318/) from people who can't kill Sense and use Android Home. I tried it in myself in a phone store. Android Home is simply not installed on the phone, so when you kill Sense off you have the choice of reloading Sense only.

Also, custom ROMs on Modaco specifically give the option of ADDING Android Home to the ROM.
